Marek Alscher Named to Czech Preliminary World Juniors Roster

Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to announce that defenseman Marek Alscher, 18, has been named to Team Czechia's preliminary roster for the 2023 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, which is scheduled to take place in Halifax, N.S. and Moncton, N.B. from December 26, 2022, to January 5, 2023.

Alscher, a third-round draft selection of the Florida Panthers in 2022, will represent his home country as an underage defenseman at the biggest under-20 tournament in the world. Through 26 games this season, the Kladno, CZE native has six goals and five assists for 11 points and is a member of both Winterhawks special teams units. Though not an official tracked statistic by the Western Hockey League, the 6-foot-3, 198-pound defenseman is an elite shot blocker and has blossomed into one of the Winterhawks' best all-around players this fall.

Alscher has represented Czechia on the international stage throughout his junior career at the under-16, under-17, under-18 and under-20 levels of competition. Most recently, Alscher competed for Czechia alongside fellow Winterhawk Jan Špunar at the 2022 Four Nations Tournament weeks before the WHL season began.

Czechia will drop the puck on preliminary play against Canada on Boxing Day (Dec. 26) at 3:30 p.m. PT, followed by games against Austria, Sweden, and Germany. Alscher is expected to report to Czechia's training camp this week.
