Manitoba Ends Sound Tigers' Streaks With Shutout
December 6, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT â The American Hockey League's 2001-02 Regular Season Champion and Eastern Conference Playoff Champion Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 4-0 to the Manitoba Moose at home on Friday ending their home-ice unbeaten streak at eleven games, 9-0-2, and their overall unbeaten streak at nine games, 6-0-3.
The match was the Sound Tigers' shortest home game of the season, lasting just one hour and 59 minutes. It was also the first-ever regular-season meeting between the teams, but the Sound Tigers did eliminate Manitoba three games to one in last year's Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
Bridgeport took the first seven shots of the game and held Manitoba without a shot until Moose Defenseman Nolan Baumgartner opened the scoring with his third goal of the season at 6:27 on assists from Fedor Fedorov and John Craighead. The 1-0 lead held up through the first intermission.
Jeff Farkas put Manitoba up 2-0 just :50 into the second period with his fifth goal of the season, on the power play, from Jimmy Roy and Ryan Ready. The Moose power play struck again when Brandon Reid made it 3-0 with his sixth goal of the season at 6:26 of the third period on a pretty rush after getting assists from Fedorov and Justin Kurtz.
Reid then put the game away with his second goal of the night and seventh of the season, an unassisted tally, with just 2:42 remaining in the game to make it 4-0 Manitoba.
The loss also snapped a 14-game unbeaten streak, 9-0-5, for Sound Tigers' Goaltender Rick DiPietro who made 25 saves in a losing effort. Alex Auld looked sharp in net for Manitoba making 30 saves for his first shutout of the season.
The Sound Tigers were 0 for 5 on the power play while Manitoba was 2 for 4. The Sound Tigers had a 30-29 shots on goal advantage. Auld was the number one star of the game. Reid was the number two star. Fedorov, with two assists, was the number three star.
The Sound Tigers will host the Philadelphia Phantoms tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. before playing six consecutive road games, starting in Albany versus the River Rats Sunday at 4 p.m.
All Sound Tigers' games are broadcast live on "The ZONE" FOX Sports Radio 1300 and at soundtigers.com. Road games are also broadcast on WSTC/WNLK 1400/1350.
