MANCHESTER, N.H. - Five goals in a span of 12:36 of the second period broke the game open for the Manchester Monarchs as they defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 6-2 at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester on Saturday night. The Monarchs improve to 32-17-1-5 overall. The loss drops the Sound Tigers to 19-27-3-3.

The Sound Tigers took the lead early in the first period as the top line got the Sound Tigers on the board. After a sustained shift in the Manchester zone, the puck came free to Brandon Svendsen in the right faceoff circle. His shot was tipped in front by Justin DiBenedetto past goaltender Jeff Zatkoff for his team-leading 12th goal of the year, and the Sound Tigers lead 1-0 8:29 into the game. The Sound Tigers signed forward Eric Castonguay to a PTO earlier in the day, and the new addition made an immediate impact. After scoring in his only game with the Sound Tigers on Nov. 28, 2010 against Norfolk earlier this year, Castonguay repeated that previous performance with his second goal in as many games at 14:40 of the period. Joel Martin stopped all nine shots he faced in the frame and the Sound Tigers led 2-0 after the first period.

However, Manchester would turn the tide of the game and exploded for five goals in the second period. Dwight King cut the deficit to one just 26 seconds into the period and Colten Teubert tied the score less than two minutes later after Brandon Svendsen was unable to clear the zone. Justin Azevedo's shot from point at 4:23 gave the Monarchs a 3-2 lead and King's deflection on the power play at 6:48 doubled the lead. Head Coach Pat Bingham decided to pull Joel Martin in favor of Riley Gill marking Gill's Sound Tigers debut. Gill was beaten by Brandon Kozun's shot at 13:02 of the second, and after two periods the Monarchs had the 5-2 advantage.

Corey Elkins' wraparound at 2:55 of the third period rounded out the scoring for the Monarchs as they skated away with a decisive 6-2 win.

Joel Martin took the loss in net allowing four goals on 16 shots. Jeff Zatkoff earned the win for Manchester with 26 saves.

The Sound Tigers return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Portland Pirates at 3 p.m.
