Adirondack Phantoms News Release
PHILADELPHIA - Despite nine power play opportunities, the Philadelphia Phantoms were unable to solve goaltender John Curry and the division rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 4-0 defeat on Friday night at the Wachovia Spectrum. Penguins center Jeff Taffe had a hand in all four Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goals, Chris Minard added to his league-leading goal scoring tally with two goals and Curry stopped all 24 shots fired his way as the Pens pulled within a point of Philadelphia in the East Division race.
After a scoreless first, the Penguins struck early in the second period. Phantoms goaltender Scott Munroe stopped Jon D'Aversa's wrist-shot from the left circle, but the rebound bounced right to Minard, who was able to lift the puck over Munroe's shoulder for his first of the night.
Midway through the second, the Penguins increased their lead to two on a goal by left-winger Luca Caputi. Minard sent a pass from behind the Phantoms net to Caputi, who was camped out to the right of Munroe, and Caputi jammed the pass through Munroe's legs for his eighth tally of the year.
Minard added his second goal of the game in the third period, increasing the Penguins' lead to three. Jeff Taffe found a wide open Minard in the slot, and Minard took Taffe's centering pass and fired a wrist shot past Munroe's blocker for his league-leading 22nd goal of the season .
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton added a fourth goal just over a minute later courtesy of Ryan Stone. The power play tally was Stone's fourth goal of the year.
Despite yielding four goals, Munroe finished the evening with 25 saves. The Phantoms saw their points streak come to an end but still hold a record of 8-1-0-1 in December.
The Phantoms travel to Norfolk for a 7:15 game against the Admirals tomorrow and then visit the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for a re-match on Tuesday night.
