Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators defeated the Syracuse Crunch in overtime with captain Denis Hamel scoring the game-winning goal 1:22 into the extra session, his second tally of the night, to give the B-Sens a 3-2 win and their fourth straight victory over I-81 rival Syracuse.
All three Binghamton goals came on the power play, beginning with Ryan Shannon's eighth marker of the season midway through the opening period. Binghamton skated with a two-man advantage when defenseman Matt Carkner fired a shot from the high slot, bouncing off of netminder Dan LaCosta's chest pad and into the left corner. Shannon scooped up the rebound and snapped a shot over the blocker pad to tie the score at 1.
Syracuse responded two minutes later with the only even-strength goal of the night off the stick of Grant Clitsome. Clitsome took a feed in the mid-slot and fired a wrist shot over netminder Brian Elliott's glove.
Hamel buried Binghamton's second 5-on-3 goal midway through the second stanza to tie the game at 2. Hamel gathered a loose puck in the deep right corner and circled out and into the slot, where he buried a slap shot through traffic into the top corner of the net.
Elliott turned away 14 Syracuse shots in the third period to send the game into the overtime period. Craig MacDonald took a hooking penalty to give the B-Sens their eighth power-play of the night. Defenseman Mattias Karlsson fired a shot from the right point into traffic, where Hamel tipped the puck past LaCosta to secure the win for Binghamton.
Karlsson and Carkner each collected a career-high three assists to help the B-Sens to their 16th win of the year. Elliott stopped 32 shots to earn his league-leading 15th win.
