Madison Mallards News Release
ASHWAUBENON, Wis. - The Madison Mallards (20-9) fell to the Green Bay Booyah in the nightcap of their doubleheader in walk-off fashion on Tuesday night. Mike Ferri (UW-Milwaukee) bounced a walk-off single up the middle with the bases loaded in the ninth to give the Booyah a 9-8 win. The two teams split their Tuesday doubleheader.
The Mallards' offense continued its hot streak into the start of the nightcap. In the top of the first inning with two on, Justice Bigbie (Western Carolina) poked an RBI single through the infield. Then, an RBI groundout from Drew Benefield (Louisville) plated another run to give Madison an early 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Wade Stauss (SEMO) drilled a deep home run over the wall in right center to grow Madison's lead to 4-0.
The Booyah slowly started chipping away at their deficit, scoring two runs in the third after RBIs from Jacob Buchberger (Davenport) and Jarrett Ford (FIU). The Mallards re-extended the lead and made it a 5-2 advantage in the fourth after an RBI double from Benefield.
Green Bay, however, did not go quietly and slimmed it to a 5-4 Mallard lead in the fourth inning on a stolen base followed by an RBI from Ty Herrenbruck (Pittsburg State). In the fifth, the Booyah took a 6-5 lead after a two-run home run from Joe Mason (Mount Olive)
In the top of the sixth, Benefield delivered again with an RBI single to knot the game 6-6.
Green Bay added a run in the sixth on a ball in play by Buchberger and tacked on another run in the seventh on a solo home run from Nick Kreutzer (Arkansas Pine Bluff), pushing Green Bay ahead 8-6.
In the top of the ninth with a runner on second, Stauss delivered with a gritty at-bat and his second home run of the night to once again deadlock the game, this time at 8-8.
Green Bay loaded the bases with one out in the ninth before Ferri poked the game-winning through the infield.
Jaret Godman (Oklahoma) earned the win for Green Bay as he was the last pitcher to throw before the walk-off hit. Madison's Theo Denlinger (Bradley) allowed the hit to Ferri and was given the loss.
Turning Point
With the game tied in the ninth, Ferri entered as a pinch hitter. On a 1-0 offering, Ferri chopped a single back up the middle to propel the Booyah to victory in the nightcap.
