Mallards Cruise to Seventh Straight Win

June 9, 2018 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release

Madison, Wis. - The Madison Mallards (9-3) rolled to a 6-1 win over the Battle Creek Bombers on Saturday night at Warner Park. The win extends the Madison winning streak to seven games and sustains the Mallards lead over the Northwoods League South Division. Madison took advantage of three Battle Creek errors and made the most of their six hits, coming through with key run-scoring knocks with runners on base.

Turning Point

After scoring three runs in the first inning by taking advantage of three Battle Creek errors, the Mallards stretched the lead with a steady display of offense in the bottom of the fourth. Tyler Plantier (Richmond) led off the inning with a single and two batters later, Drew Ober(UNC Charlotte) singled in Plantier from second. Trevor Schwecke (UW-Milwaukee) and Garrett Kueber (Austin Peay) followed with RBI singles of their own and the Mallards pushed the lead to 6-0.

Meanwhile, the Mallards pitching staff was able to pitch well in key situations with Bombers on base. While Battle Creek tallied ten total hits, clutch pitching and defense limited the Bombers to only one run. The biggest defensive play of the night was a home-run robbery by leftfielder Drew Ober in the third inning when Ober reached over the short wall in left field to haul in a deep fly ball hit by Bombers first baseman Zach Gartner.

Top Mallards

-   Mallards designated hitter Tyler Plantier (Richmond) collected three hits and knocked in a run, extending his season-long hitting streak.

- Madison left fielder Drew Obercontributed both offensively and defensively, robbing a home run and collecting two hits and an RBI.

- Mallards starting pitcher Ryan Kutt pitched 5.0 scoreless innings and earned the game's winning decision. Kutt struck out five and walked only one in the impressive outing by the Illinois righty.

Quoteables

Ryan Kutt on scattering six hits and keeping the Bombers off of the board...

"I gave up more hits than I wanted to, a lot of infield hits, little dinkers into the outfield. But I knew that my stuff was good today and that if I pounded the zone, I was going to get guys out. We had great defense behind me and I just had to let them do the work."
