Willmar Falls to Duluth in Series Opener
June 9, 2018 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Willmar Stingers News Release
Duluth, Minn. - Willmar continued to struggle on their road trip dropping their third straight, this time to Duluth.
On a cold night in Duluth the Stingers could not keep up with the hot swinging bats of the Huskies.
Things didn't start out badly for the Stingers who in the first scored a run on the most exciting play in baseball. Caleb Ricca (Northwestern State) smashed a ball to left field bouncing off of the 340 foot fence and rolling back towards the infield. Ricca rounded the bases for an inside the park homer to give Willmar a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the first Duluth would start to smash Willmar pitching, starting with four consecutive base hits and ending with four runs in the first.
Jayson Newman (Cal-State Northridge) did have a big hit though in the fifth, crushing a two run homer over the right field wall and bring Willmar into striking range.
But once again the Huskies would rebound and put up two more runs in the seventh eventually leading to an 11-8 victory.
Willmar would trail for the rest of the ball game eventually falling 11-8.
