Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - One of the top defensive halfbacks in the CFL will be wearing Blue & Gold for the foreseeable future, with today's news that Anthony Malbrough has re-signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Malbrough (5-10, 186, Texas Tech '99, DOB: Dec. 9, 1976 in Beaumont, Texas) led or tied for the lead among Blue Bombers defenders in several categories this past season, including fumble recoveries (three) and pass knockdowns (six). He also registered 40 defensive tackles and one quarterback sack in 17 regular season starts.
"Anthony Malbrough played a key role in our football club's defensive turnaround this past season," said Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman. "He is an experienced, poised veteran who makes big plays and has a calming influence on the entire defensive unit."
The Blue Bombers acquired Malbrough in an Oct. 2, 2005 trade with the Calgary Stampeders. He played in only one game that season with the Bombers due to a nagging injury.
Malbrough started his CFL career in 2002 with Calgary. He played in seven games with the Stamps in '02, registering six defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, three pass knockdowns, two forced fumbles and one fumble return for a 37-yard touchdown.
In 2003, he appeared in 12 regular season games with the Stamps, and finished with 24 defensive tackles, three special teams tackles, three pass knockdowns and one tackle for a loss.
Calgary traded Malbrough to the Ottawa Renegades on Jan. 16, 2004. He played in 17 games for Ottawa that season, registering 40 defensive tackles, two special teams tackles, five pass knockdowns, one fumble return and one interception return for a 55-yard touchdown.
Malbrough re-signed with Calgary as a free agent in February 2005. He played in nine games for the Stamps prior to being dealt to Winnipeg.
