Sanford Mainers News Release

On Friday night the Sanford Mainers started a nine game, nine day stretch with the addition of another game that is to be continued after being suspended in June. They started the stretch in Wakefield, Rhode Island against the Ocean State Waves, but fell by a small margin of 3-2.

The Waves were riding a five game winning streak heading into the game, but the Mainers didn t let them continue that streak easily.

Both teams were blanked in the first couple of innings, but in the top of the third the Mainers hit the board. New addition, Robert Wayman walked and then stole second with one out. Sam Balzano grounded out, but Wayman was able to advance to third. With two outs Troy Black singled through the right side allowing Wayman to score.

In the bottom of the third the Waves answered. Walker Moses led off the inning with a bunt single down the third baseline, but was caught stealing two pitches later. Reed Gamache walked and then reached third when Troy Black overthrew Will Cooper at second when trying to execute a double play.

After loading the bases, Mainers starter EJ Ashworth threw a wild pitch allowing Gamache to come in to score the tying run. On the next pitch Caden Bailey scored on a single by Mike Gerber. Christian Muscarello scored the Waves third and final run during the next at bat when Chris King grounded out to second.

The Mainers threatened in the sixth when Jake Thomas grounded an infield single on the left side allowing Cole Martin to come in from third to score. The Moose loaded the bases when Cooper was hit by a pitch, but Wayman popped out to end the inning.

Ashworth got the loss on the night, but did pitch six strong innings, allowing six hits, while striking out five.

The Mainers return home tomorrow night to face the Laconia Muskrats for the first time this season. James Bourque is expected to make the start. Game time is set for 6:30pm.
