
Newport Gulls Split Doubleheader with Mystic Schooners

Mystic, CT - Brett Lilek and Joe Iorio combined to shutout the Mystic Schooners 7-0 in Game 1, while Schooners starter Kurt Sowa went the distance in a complete game 6-2 victory in Game 2 as the Newport Gulls split a day-night doubleheader with the Mystic Schooners on the road at Fitch High School Field on Saturday, July 6.
Designated hitter Ben Roberts went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, third baseman Joel McKeithan went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and outfielder Timmy Robinson blasted a two-run homer, his first of the year, to power the Gulls offense in the first game of the doubleheader.
Lilek fired five shutout innings in his second start of the season, working around six hits while issuing just one walk and striking out two. Iorio came in to work the final two innings, giving up just one hit while striking out five Schooners.
Sowa shutdown the Gulls offense in the tail end of the doubleheader, giving up just two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out six. Newport starter Kyle Hart took the loss, lasting just two innings in his first start of the season. Hart gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Mystic outfielder Brandon Cipolla went 2-for-3 with a home run, walk and a pair of runs scored and RBI in the victory.
Newport will be back in action taking on the Plymouth Pilgrims at Forges Field on Sunday, July 7th. The Gulls will send right-hander Tyler Ferguson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound for his second start of the season. Plymouth will counter with right-hander Vaughn Hayward (0-0, 5.40 ERA).
Since moving to Newport in 2001, the Gulls have captured the New England Collegiate Baseball League championship, the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup, an NECBL-record five times, and in 2012 were named the No. 1 summer collegiate team in the country by Perfect Game USA in Perfect Game's Top 50 final rankings, capping a record-breaking season by Newport and marking the first time ever that an NECBL franchise has been ranked No. 1 nationally.
The Gulls, which attract more than 50,000 fans annually to historic Cardines Field in Newport, recruit players from the top college baseball programs in the country, and to date have sent six alumni to Major League Baseball teams, and over 150 players to professional baseball teams ranging from Independent leagues to Triple-A.
