Mainers Drop One-Run Game to Laconia
July 6, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release
In eighteen games, the Mainers were 3-4 in one-run battles and tonight the battle continued against the Laconia Muskrats, but it was the Muskrats who swiped it 2-1.
Right away the Muskrats looked to capitalize against Mainers starter James Bourque. Joe Torres led things off with a single to center and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Tyler Campbell walked, but the pitch also got passed Nate LaPointe at the plate allowing Torres to advance to third. Bourque bore down and struck out the next two batters, but walked Joey Bielek to load the bases. He then got Jordan Lee to ground out into a 4-unassisted fielder's choice to end the inning.
The Muskrats did take the lead in the fourth scoring twice for all the run production they would need. Ryan McBroom singled to lead things off and then advanced to second on a walk issued to Lee. Taylor Drake doubled to deep right scoring McBroom. During the next at bat, Lee scored when Kaleb Barlow grounded out.
Will Blalock who started the game for the Muskrats was dominant in the seven innings that he pitched. He allowed only five hits and the Mainers sole run. He struck out eight in that time.
That one run came in the sixth inning when Jake Thomas hit a double to left-centerfield scoring Robert Wayman who singled to start the inning.
The Mainers had a chance to walk off in the bottom of the ninth when Cole Martin singled to center with one out. Kyle Moore pinch ran for Martin and advanced to third when Will Cooper singled down the right field line. Cooper then took second on a defensive indifference play during the next at bat. With two outs and Nate LaPointe at the plate and the game winning run at second, Muskrats Ryan Tezak struck out LaPointe to end the game.
Both teams entered into tonight with a two game losing streak. That streak continues for the Mainers while the Muskrats are now up one.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow, but this time in Laconia, New Hampshire. Evan Hill will take the ball for the Mainers. Game time is slated for 6:30pm.
