Mahan's Homer Not Enough as Wahoos Take Series Opener

July 27, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Riley Mahan homered on Saturday, but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp lost their series opener 7-1 to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. A crowd of 7,617 enjoyed a Hank Aaron jersey giveaway presented by Swisher International, VyStar Credit Union Military Appreciation Night and Action News Jax Night.

Jacksonville (49-56, 20-15) led 1-0 in the fourth inning. However, Jumbo Shrimp starter Jorge Guzman (4-10) yielded back-to-back home runs from Mark Contreras and Jimmy Kerrigan to allow Pensacola (55-50, 17-18) to pull in front 2-1.

Joe Cronin led off the fifth with a walk before Jordan Gore singled him to second. Two batters later, Cronin scored on a 4-9-6 fielder's choice.

The Jumbo Shrimp got on the board on Mahan's first-inning home run. However, that was the extent of the damage against Blue Wahoos starter Griffin Jax (4-3), who pitched 7.1 innings of one-run ball.

A Ryan Costello single coupled with a Jumbo Shrimp error plated Ryan Jeffers to push the Pensacola advantage to 4-1 in the sixth.

Jeffers launched a solo shot in the eighth.

Ivan De Jesus Jr. smacked a two-run home run in the ninth to grow the lead to 7-1.

Saturday's winning raffle number of 1572915001 won a prize of $167.
