Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons (20-12, 47-54) collected a season-high 18 hits in a wild 11-10 victory against the Chattanooga Lookouts (10-24, 46-57) on Friday night at Regions Field.
The 18-hit effort marked the Barons' most in a game since they tallied 20 hits against Huntsville on June 24, 2013. Birmingham also recorded 18 hits in a game in 2015, 2016 and 2018.
The Barons scored all 11 runs within the first four innings of the game and built up an 11-1 advantage. Nick Madrigal's leadoff double in the first ignited the offense and the White Sox No. 4 prospect came around to score the first run of the game.
Birmingham plated five runs in the second frame, which tied its most runs in a single inning this season. Seven batters reached base within eight at-bats, including run-scoring hits from Laz Rivera, Joel Booker, Blake Rutherford and Gavin Sheets.
RBI-doubles off the bats of Alfredo Gonzalez and Booker, along with an RBI-single by Rivera, helped the Barons open up the 10-run lead after four innings.
The Barons saw four players record three-hit nights at the plate - Booker, Rivera, Luis Gonzalez and Damek Tomscha. All nine players in the starting lineup collected at least one hit.
However, Chattanooga charged back with nine unanswered runs across the next three frames to pull within one run. The Lookouts plated four in the fifth, two in the sixth and three more in the seventh against a collection of three Barons pitchers.
Birmingham starter Tanner Banks settled for a no-decision in which he allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits across 4.2 innings of work. The southpaw gave way to Kodi Medeiros with two outs and a pair of runners aboard in the fifth.
Medeiros managed to limit the damage in his initial frame but surrendered a two-run homer to Chris Okey the following inning. It marked Okey's sixth home run of the season, five of which have come against the Barons.
Barons right-hander Mauricio Cabrera allowed three runs (all earned) on four hits in 0.2 innings out of the bullpen before right-handers Danny Dopico and Codi Heuer sealed the win.
Dopico (W, 3-2) earned his third victory of the season and struck out two in 1.2 innings of work, while Heuer locked down his team-leading fifth save of the campaign in a scoreless ninth.
The Barons concluded their nine-game homestand with a 6-3 mark and will hit the road for a 10-game stretch beginning Saturday night against the Montgomery Biscuits.
First pitch in the series opener is set for 6:05 p.m. CT at Riverwalk Stadium as Birmingham sends right-hander Lincoln Henzman (2-5, 4.59) to the mound against Montgomery left-hander Matt Krook (1-3, 4.02). The game will be broadcast via WJQX-FM 100.5.
