Barons Fall in Extras to Biscuits in Series Opener

Birmingham Barons News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A back and forth, hard-fought battle didn't end in the Birmingham Barons (47-55) favor in a 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Montgomery Biscuits (69-37) Saturday night from Riverwalk Stadium.

In the bottom of the 10th after the Biscuits tied the game on a sacrifice fly from Brett Sullivan, Carl Chester beat out an infield single that plated Josh Lowe for the 8-7 win. Barons shortstop Laz Rivera made a great fielding play and strong throw to first in the attempt.

In the top half of the inning with Joel Booker starting out on second, outfielder Luis Basabe led off with a double down the right field line to score Booker and take a 7-6 lead.

Basabe led the way Saturday night, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

The Barons set the tone early in an exciting first couple innings. Basabe reached on an infield single to the left side, but shortstop Taylor Walls tried to throw out Joel Booker trying to go from second to third.

Walls' throw was wide and skipped to the backstop, allowing Booker to go all the way from second to home and Basabe to head into second. A few batters later, Damek Tomscha continued his torrid pace at the plate when he smacked a two-RBI single to left-center and go up 3-0.

Montgomery, the first-half winners in the North Division, didn't go away quietly. They quickly came back, getting started on a two-run double in the bottom of the first by Tristan Gray and a Carl Chester single up the middle in the fourth inning to tie it at 3-3.

Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Gray launched his eighth homer of the season and brought in two runs to take a 6-3 lead. It capped off six unanswered runs by Montgomery and Gray finished the night with four runs batted in.

Mounting a three-run comeback of their own, Birmingham tacked on two in the sixth thanks to an RBI single from Ti'Quan Forbes and another RBI to the ledger for Tomscha on a sacrifice fly.

One inning later, Basabe hit a towering fly ball to center that was acrobatically ran down and caught by centerfielder Thomas Malone. However, it was deep enough to score Laz Rivera from third on a sac fly and tie it up 6-6.

Barons starter Lincoln Henzman surrendered six runs in four and a third innings pitched, but outlasted the Biscuits opener Matt Krook. Krook didn't see the second inning after giving up the three-spot to Birmingham in the first and the Biscuits used five pitchers in total.

In his second Double-A appearance, Barons No. 20 prospect Tyler Johnson came on in relief for Henzman and was lights out. He retired all eight batters faced, had his fastball moving well and struck out four Biscuits.

With his single in the second inning, Nick Madrigal extended his current hitting streak to 10-straight games. Over that span, he has four RBI, six runs and six doubles. Madrigal has also hit safely in 26 of his last 27 games.

Tomscha came into the day hot and his first inning ripped single extended his hitting streak to six consecutive games. Coming into the day, Tomscha was batting over .500 over his previous five games and notched seven hits in four games in the previous series against Chattanooga.

The Barons fell another game behind the Biscuits in the second-half standings, now 3.5 games back of the top spot. For Montgomery, it was their seventh win in a row.

The Barons will continue their series with Montgomery Sunday evening, starting at 5:05. Left-hander Matt Tomshaw (4-4, 2.18) will start and make his 14th appearance with the Barons.

WJQX-FM 100.5 will be the home of the Barons on Sunday. Fans can tune into the Coca-Cola Pregame Show starting at 4:50 p.m.

The Birmingham Barons are the proud Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The Barons will open the home portion of their 2019 season, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of Michael Jordan's lone year in baseball, against the Tennessee Smokies at 7:05 p.m. April 10 at Regions Field.
