Angels Select Contract of Former BayBear Jose Rodriguez

MOBILE, Ala. - The Los Angeles Angels announced Saturday that they have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Jose Rodriguez, a former member of the Mobile BayBears, from Triple-A Salt Lake. Rodriguez has a chance to make his Major League debut on the current seven-game homestand against Baltimore and Detroit.
Rodriguez, 23, made 28 starts with the BayBears over the past two seasons. His 23 starts last year were the most by any returning BayBears pitcher on the 2019 Opening Day roster. Rodriguez posted a 7-12 record with a 6.27 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 132 total innings pitched at the Double-A level. He held opponents to two runs or fewer in three of his five starts this season.
In 13 games, two starts, with Salt Lake, Rodriguez went 2-2 with a 6.49 ERA and struck out 39 batters in 34 2/3 innings. In 141 professional games, 105 starts, Rodriguez has a 32-38 record with a 4.72 ERA. The Bolivar, Venezuela native was originally signed by the Angels as an international free agent on December 3, 2012. Rodriguez was a Mid-Season All-Star with Burlington in 2016 and Inland Empire in 2017.
Rodriguez is set to become the 18th player to make his Major League debut for the Angels after spending time with the BayBears. He will be the 14th player from the 2018 BayBears team to appear in a Major League game and the first from this year's squad. Former BayBears infielders Luis Rengifo and Matt Thaiss, pitchers Griffin Canning and Jose Suarez, and two-way player Jared Walsh have all made their Major League debuts for the Angels this year.
