"Mad Mel" Cleared To Play
December 9, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Motor City Mechanics News Release
FRASER, MI- The Motor City Mechanics are excited to announce that both Mel Angelstad and Vlad Serov have been cleared to play by the US Government and the UHL and will be in the lineup tonight when the Mechanics face the Fury at L.C. Walker Arena.
Angelstad, or "Mad Mel" as he is internationally known, has accumulated more than 3,445 Penalty Minutes during his thirteen year Professional Hockey career, earning the reputation as one of the games toughest players ever....! Metro Detroit hockey fans may remember "Mad Mel" from his Michigan K-Wings days when, during separate incidents, he pummeled former Detroit Vipers Phil Crowe and Mike Prokopec. In an exhibition game, playing for the Dallas Stars, "Mad Mel" took on two of the NHL's toughest players; the first fight was against one of Angelstad's idols, Bob Probert and then he later challenged Reid Simpson.
Mad Mel knows he has one role to play in the Mechanics lineup: "I am here for one reason, to help the Mechanics win the Colonial Cup....! I don't plan on letting anything, or anyone, get in our way. Most of the guys in this league know who I am and my message to them is; keep your distance and don't try anything stupid....!"
Serov, 27, hails from Kiev, Ukraine and has won Colonial Cup Championships with the Flint Generals in 2000 and Quad City Mallards in 2001. Last season Serov played with Bakersfield in the ECHL and tied a career high in points (46) and set a career high in assists (27).
The Mechanics return home on Saturday December 10th to face the Quad City Mallards. Saturday also marks the 2nd annual teddy bear toss, as all fans are encouraged to bring a new teddy bear or stuffed animal and throw it on the ice when the Mechanics score their first goal. All of the bears will then be donated to the Toys For Tots organization. ALL YOUTH HOCKEY KIDS CAN GET INTO SATURDAYS GAME FREE WITH THE DONATION OF A TEDDY BEAR!
