Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- After a pair of rookies accumulated all four regulation goals, the Rockford IceHogs outdid the Port Huron Flags 2-1 in a shootout to top them 3-2 in front of 3,317 at the Rockford MetroCentre Friday night. The Hogs (16-5-1) kept their nine-point lead in the Western Division with the win. Rockford goalie Ronnie Vogel remained unbeaten on the season, running his club-record unbeaten streak to 12 games (11-0-1).
Rookie winger Robin Big Snake tallied twice in the first period for Rockford to give the Hogs the 2-0 advantage. Big Snake's first goal was knocked in at 5:59. Then on a delayed penalty, Big Snake picked up a centering pass from fellow rookie Steve Yetman at 18:27 for his second of the night. For Big Snake, it was his second straight two-goal performance and third overall on the season.
Late in the second period, Flags rookie winger Vin Hellemeyer tallied his first career goal when he beat Vogel on a 2-on-1 breakaway at 19:50. Hellemeyer later capitalized after Rockford failed to clear their zone at 4:53 of the final frame, tying the score at 2-2, sending the game to a shootout.
In the extra session, Brett Lutes (round 2) was the only Port Huron skater to crack Vogel while center Preston Mizzi (round 2) and Jason Notermann (round 4) solved Flags goalie Jeremy Symington to vault the Hogs to the win.
Symington was saddled with the loss despite making 39 saves, including 16 in the first period. Vogel stopped 20 shots in the winning effort. Rockford held the Flags to 0-for-5 on the power play.
Next Home Games: Saturday, Dec.10 vs. Muskegon Fury. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. The two-time defending champs come to Rockford for the first time this season. The first 1,500 fans will receive an IceHogs Tumbler Mug from McDonald's. Also, don't forget a Teddy Bear! The game is the Hogs Annual Teddy Bear Toss and after Rockford scores their first goal, fans can throw the bears onto the ice. All the stuffed bears will be collected and donated to local hospitals and charities for children.
