Mississippi Braves News Release
Hoover, AL - The Mississippi Braves opened up the second half of 2012 in fine fashion, taking down the Birmingham Barons 10-7 on Thursday night at Regions Park. After an eight-run third inning, the Braves never looked back.
Cameron Bayne pitched well for Birmingham (0-1; 30-40) through two innings, but Jason Christian's one-out single started a stretch of nine straight Braves to reach in the third, eight of them scoring to turn a 1-0 deficit into an 8-1 lead. Joey Terdoslavich drove in two with a bases loaded single to give the Braves the lead, and two batters later Todd Cunningham cleared the bases with a triple to extend his hit streak to 16 games.
That was plenty for Luis Avilan and the Braves (1-0; 31-40). Avilan allowed just two runs on five hits in six innings. He bounced back from a 20-pitch first inning in which Jared Mitchell hit a solo home run to pick up his second victory. Bayne suffered his seventh loss and is now 2-7 in his last nine decisions.
Mississippi scored necessary insurance runs in the final two frames. Ian Gac led off the eighth inning with a double and scored on Phil Gosselin's two-out double. Then in the ninth, Cunningham reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch. That made it a 10-3 game, and Mississippi needed nearly every run.
Birmingham came storming back in the bottom of the ninth. Jim Gallagher, Seth Loman and Erik Morrison hit three straight singles to start the ninth off of Andrew Wilson. All three eventually came in to score, and Jose Martinez singled with one out and scored on a Jared Mitchell RBI. That made it a 10-7 game but Chris Jones retired Andy Wilkins on a line to right to end the game and preserve the win.
Mitchell led the way for Birmingham at the plate, driving in three on a 2-for-4 night. Gac doubled twice for the Braves and drove in two. The M-Braves have now won three straight games, and have scored double-figure runs in three of their last seven games. Birmingham is 2-10 in their last 12 contests.
The Braves look to continue their winning ways on Friday night at 7:05 PM with game two against the Barons. RHP Gary Moran (2-5, 3.22 ERA) climbs the hill for the Braves. Listen live beginning at 6:30 PM CT with the Vicksburg Toyota "Countdown to First Pitch" on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
