
Generals Make Series of Roster Moves to Start Second Half

JACKSON, TENN. (JUNE 21, 2012) - The Seattle Mariners have made the following roster move that effects the Jackson Generals roster. Today RHP Jonathan Arias, LHP Anthony Fernandez and INF Stefen Romero have been promoted from Advanced Class-A High Desert to Jackson. Also, RHP Andrew Kittredge has been transferred from Jackson to Low-A Clinton. OF Chih-Hsien Chiang cleared waivers has been out righted to Jackson. The moves are made a day after LHP Danny Hultzen and INF Nick Franklin were promoted to Triple-A Tacoma.

ARIAS, 24, joins Jackson from High Desert where he was 4-3, with a 5.40 ERA in 24 relief appearances. In 35.0 innings pitched Arias has struck out 36 batters. He has 7 saves on the season with the Mavericks.
Last season with A- Clinton Arias was 5-3, with a 3.27 ERA, including 9 saves in 39 relief appearances. He struck out 101 batters in just 63.1 innings pitched. He led all Midwest League relievers in strikeouts per 9.0 IP with a 14.35 average (101 K in 63.1 IP); only full-time reliever in the MWL to strike out 100 batters in 2011.
Arias converted from a catcher to a pitcher in 2009 after being signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2006 out of Bani, Dominican Republic. In 271 minor league at-bats, Arias was a .210 career hitter, with 2 home runs and 30 RBI.
Chiang, 24, was designated for assignment on June 17th and has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Jackson. He has split the season between Triple-A Tacoma and the Generals where he has combined to hit .242 (56x231) with 24 runs, 12 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 25 RBI in 59 games. Chiang was on a 4-game hit streak for Jackson, batting .471 (8x17), with 4 doubles, 8 RBI and 2 runs in those games. The Taiwan native was acquired from Boston on July 31, 2011 in exchange for LHP Erik Bedard and RHP Josh Fields.
FERNANDEZ, 22, joins the Generals, also from High Desert. Fernandez was 2-5 in 12 starts for the Mavericks, with a 3.68 ERA. Fernandez was tied with Danny Hultzen for the most strikeouts in the Mariners organization with 79. He only walked 14 batters in 88.0 innings pitched.
The 6-4, 180 lefty was signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted free agent in 2006 out of Santiago, Dominican Republic.
ROMERO, 23, joins the Generals after an All-Star first half in the California League with Advanced Class-A High Desert. Romero finished his first half batting .357 which ranked 2nd in the California League and 1st in the Mariners organization, with 11 home runs, 19 doubles and 51 RBI. Romero has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games in the month of June, batting .362 (21x58) with 12 runs scored, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 11 RBI.
Romero was the Mariners 12th round pick in the 2010 draft out of Oregon State University. The Tucson, Ariz native was named to the 1st Team All-Pac-10 team during the 2010 college season.
KITTREDGE, 22, appeared in just 1 game for the Generals allowing 1 run 1 hit in 1.1 innings pitched last Friday against Chattanooga. The former Washington Huskies pitcher returns to Clinton where he was 1-0, with a 1.23 ERA in 3 games.
INJURY UPDATE
Current disabled Generals INF Nate Tenbrink and OF Johermyn Chavez will begin a rehab assignment with the (R) AZL Mariners of the Arizona League.
The Generals roster stands at 24 active players, and 6 disabled.
