Smokies Make Series Of Roster Moves Thursday

KODAK, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies, Class AA minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce today that OF Nelson Perez and RHP Casey Weathers have been added to the team's active roster in advance of today's series opener with the Jacksonville Suns. In corresponding moves, INF Rebel Ridling and RHP Brian Schlitter have been sent to the Class High A Daytona Cubs. All moves are immediate, with Perez and Weathers available for the Smokies' second-half opener in Jacksonville, Fla.

Perez, 24, joins the Smokies for the first time in 2012. In 63 games with Daytona this season, he was batting .288 (61 H/212 AB) with six doubles, four triples and 11 home runs. Perez spent 88 games with the Smokies in 2011, hitting .249 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs. The San Francisco de Marcoris, DR native signed with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2006.

Weathers, 27, returns after being placed on the disabled list on May 25. In 13 relief appearances with the Smokies this season, the righty was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA (6 ER/14.2 IP) at the time of the injury. Originally drafted in the first round (eighth overall) by the Colorado Rockies in 2007, Weathers was traded to the Cubs, along with INF Ian Stewart for OF Tyler Colvin and INF DJ LeMahieu in 2011.

Ridling, 26, is batting .190 (43 H/226 IP) with seven doubles, eight home runs and 36 RBIs in 68 games with the Smokies this season. The Sentinel, Okla. native was selected by the Cubs in the 25th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Schlitter, 26, holds a 1-2 record with a 4.64 ERA (11 ER/21.1) with the Smokies this season. The Park Ridge, Ill. native was originally selected in the 16th round of the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, and traded to the Cubs in 2008 for P Scott Eyre.
