Montgomery Biscuits News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (10-11) brushed aside the Biscuits (9-13), 3-1, in game two of a five-game series in front of 3,022 at Trustmark Park on Friday night.
The Biscuits struck first with a run off of M-Braves' starter Jonny Venters in the first inning. With one away, Brandon Chaves walked and advanced to second base on a Rhyne Hughes single. Rashad Eldridge then sent a ball to first baseman Kala Ka'aihue. Ka'aihue went to second to cut down Hughes, but the return throw from shortstop Brandon Hicks was errant and as it trickled away, Chaves scored for a 1-0 lead.
Biscuits' starter Aneury Rodriguez cruised through three innings, facing the minimum. Mississippi broke through in the fourth however, plating three runs for a 3-1 lead. Gorkys Hernandez started the trouble with a leadoff double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Rodriguez hit Matt Young before Willie Cabrera sent a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game, 1-1. Greg Creek then stepped in and launched a two-run home run to right field to net the M-Braves the lead for the first time, 3-1. The blast would stand up as the game-winner and cap the scoring.
Venters worked around five hits and five walks and departed the game after five innings having conceded just the lone run in the first inning. Venters (1-1) earned the win, successfully avoiding trouble throughout the night.
Rodriguez (0-4) pitched well, but lost for the fourth time this season, despite turning in the longest outing for a Biscuits starter thus far this season (6.1 IP). All told, Rodriguez allowed just three hits, while walking two and striking out six.
Jeff Lyman followed Venters into the game, and held the Biscuits at bay for three innings. He allowed just two hits, while retiring the final eight batters he faced. Rafael Cruz entered in the ninth and nailed down the win while earning his fifth save.
Game three of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. RHP Heath Rollins (1-1, 2.91) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Deunte Heath (1-0, 0.83) for Mississippi.
