
Jaxx drop one run game to Barons 4-3 on Friday night

Birmingham, Ala. (May 1, 2009) - The Birmingham Barons (15-6) win game two over the Diamond Jaxx (9-12) 4 -3 on Friday night in front of 6,327 fans at Regions Park, in Birmingham. The Barons have taken the first two games of the series.
The Barons jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning on back-to-back base hits. Stefan Gartrell tripled, and C.J. Retherford ripped a line drive back up the middle scoring Gartrell from third.
West Tenn answered in the top of the third inning. Matt Mangini led the inning with a single. Mel Stocker singled putting runners on second and third base. Ezeqiuel Carrera brought Mangini in from third with an RBI groundout to first.
Birmingham added a run in the fourth, and it was the same duo as in the second inning. This time, Stefan Gartrell picked up a two out walk, and C.J. Retherford plugged the gap in right-center plating Gartrell from first. The Barons led 3-2 after four innings.
The Jaxx would take their first lead of the game in the sixth inning. The first three batters in the inning would reach base loading the bases for Greg Halman. He grounded to first scoring Ezequiel Carrera from third tying the game. Marshall Hubbard scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch by Brian Omogrosso. West Tenn led 3-2.
The Barons tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Dayan Viciedo . Then in the bottom of the seventh, the Barons re-take the lead on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Flowers off of Mumba Rivera. The Barons led 4-3 going to the ninth.
Jaxx starter, Patrick Ryan dealt his second quality start in a row, dealing six innings, allowing three runs while scattering five hits. He picks up a no decision.
Ezequiel Carrera extended his on-base streak in the game with two hits. Carrera is leading the Southern League in hitting. He is hitting .370 on the year with an on base percentage of .489.
The win goes to Barons reliever Clevelan Santeliz (1-0) and the loss to Mumba Rivera (2-2) for the Jaxx. Fernando Hernandez (4) picks up the save. The second in two days for Hernandez.
The Jaxx and Barons play game three of the series on Saturday night at 7:05. Justin Souza (0-1, 1.80) makes the start for the Jaxx. He will be opposed by RHP Kyle McCulloch (3-1, 2.14) for the Birmingham Barons.
