Mississippi Braves News Release

Pearl, MS - Johnny Venters and two relievers kept the Biscuits in check and Greg Creek's two-run homer provided all the offense the Braves would need as they got back in the win column Friday night. Creek's second homer of the year gave the Braves a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish.

The Biscuits picked up where they left off Thursday night - drilling three hits and putting a run on the board in the top of the first. Brandon Chaves walked and would eventually score on a throwing error by Brandon Hicks.

The Braves took the lead with a three-spot in the fourth. Gorkys Hernandez started the inning with a double and he moved to third on a wild pitch. After Matt Young was hit by a pitch, Hernandez scored on a Willie Cabrera sac-fly. Greg Creek then stepped to the plate and blasted his second homer of the year into the Farm Bureau Grill in right field.

Before the top of the sixth inning, Abigail Giddens was recognized as the Mississippi Braves 1,000,000th fan. The 10-year old Giddens was showered with Mississippi Braves gifts including four season tickets, the use of an M-Braves suite, a Jeff Francoeur autographed baseball and bat, a Brian McCann autographed baseball, a Dale Murphy autographed baseball, a Phillip Wellman autographed jersey, 10 free meals at the Farm Bureau Grill, an autographed picture of the entire 2008 Southern League Championship team, a bat autographed by the entire 2008 Southern League Championship team and a 19-inch Visio flat screen television.

Johnny Venters gave the Braves five strong innings giving up just one run on five hits. He left the game with a 3-1 lead and in position to earn his first win of the year. Jeff Lyman threw two scoreless innings and Rafael Cruz earned his fifth save of the year with a shutout ninth.

Aneury Rodriguez (0-4) had a good outing, but gave up three runs on three hits through 6.1 innings and took the loss. Chris Mason tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Game three of this five-game series will be at 7:05 pm Saturday night at Trustmark Park. The Braves' Deunte Heath (1-0, 0.83) will take on Montgomery's Heath Rollins (1-1, 2.91).

The Amazing Christopher will be in attendance Saturday night to entertain fans between innings.
