THE HILLCATS: Last night, the Hillcats beat the Wilmington Blue Rocks 1-0...RHP Cody Martin took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for the Hillcats, but it was broken up by the first batter that inning...Martin still went seven scoreless, and relievers LHP Chasen Shreve and RHP Juan Jaime completed the shutout...DH Tim Smith hit a solo homer in the sixth inning for Lynchburg, his first of the season...The 'Cats have now won four in a row...Lynchburg is 18-12 and is still in first place in the Carolina League Northern Division...
VS. WILMINGTON: The Hillcats face the Blue Rocks for the first time this season, this week in Wilmington...Lynchburg has won the first two games of this series and will attempt the sweep tonight...Last year, the Hillcats won the season series 10-9 with one game scheduled to be played in Wilmington getting cancelled...
TRAVELING NORTH: Lynchburg is the southern-most team in the Northern Division...When traveling north to face divisional foes this season, they are now 7-1, after winning each of the first two games against Wilmington this week...They also swept the Frederick Keys in three-games two weekends ago (4/27-4/29) and took two of three from the Potomac Nationals 4/13-4/15...The 'Cats have traveled south to face Salem and Carolina, but have lost both series, posting a record of 2-5...This is the Hillcats first trip to Wilmington this year where they went 4-5 a season ago...
GOOSE EGGS: The Hillcats shut out the Wilmington Blue Rocks last night...It was the second shutout thrown by the 'Cats this season...Both have been on the road, the first coming on April 27 in Frederick...Lynchburg won that game 1-0 as they did last night...Last night it was DH Tim Smith's solo homer that was the difference; in Frederick it was home run from C Evan Gattis...The Blue Rocks have now been blank a league-most four times...They are hitting .232 as a team, second-worst in the league, and are averaging just 3.55 runs per game, a league-low mark...
STREAK FOR THE CASH: Two Hillcats are currently on a five-game or better hitting streaks entering tonight's game in Wilmington...SS Nick Ahmed has the hottest streak at nine games, which passes OF Robby Hefflinger's previous team-high streak of eight this season...Hefflinger set that mark in the first eight games of the season...Ahmed has only one multi-hit game in that stretch...He is 10-for-36 (.278) with four doubles and a home run, which makes up 45 percent of his extra-base hits this season...1B Chris Garcia, extended his streak to five games going 1-for-3...He is 8-for-17 (.471) with two doubles, a home run, five RBI, and three runs scored, as well as two steals in that span...
START YOUR DAY OFF RIGHT: Lynchburg is currently on a four-game winning streak, their best stretch since winning their first five games of the season...The reason for the streak seems to be undoubtedly thanks to excellent starting pitching...Over the last four contests, Lynchburg starters are 3-0 with a 1.33 ERA...They have allowed just four earned runs in 27 innings in that stretch, and struck out 20 to just four walks...
TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL: RHP Cody Martin had retired 13 straight batters heading into his seventh inning of work last night, and still had a no-hitter intact...Wilmington's 2B Angel Franco hit a soft liner to left field to lead off the seventh inning and put the no-no to rest...Martin stayed in to finish the seventh inning, and still held the Blue Rocks scoreless...It was his fourth start, of six, in which he has allowed one or less runs...He struck out seven and has now fanned at least six in each of his first six starts...His 42 Ks currently lead the Carolina League...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Sugar Ray Marimon was signed out of Cartegena, Colombia November 20, 2006 at 18 years-old...Made his pro debut with the DSL Royals...Went 1-2 with a 2.05 ERA in 14 appearances, 10 starts...Has moved up a level in every season since...Only pitched 13 innings in 2008 with Burlington in the 'Appy' League...Has pitched over 60 innings in each of his last three seasons, starting 40 games and making two relief appearances...Posted a 5.29 ERA form 2009-2011, but vastly improved last year in Low-A Kane County...Went 3-5 with a 3.68 ERA...Cut down his walk rate to 2.73 per 9 IP, first time it was below 3.00 in his career...Was a Midwest League All-Star...Pitched seven and two-thirds innings of a combined no-hitter on May 17 vs. Cedar Rapids...Missed most of the second half due to right rotator cuff impingement syndrome...Started this season piggy-backing with RHP Leondy Perez...Tonight, RHP Santiago Garrido will join his piggy-back rotation...Marimon is 2-0 with a 2.88 ERA in six games, three starts this season...Went a season-high six innings in his last start on May 1 vs Salem...
