MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Seeing the first doubleheader action of the season, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, swept the Carolina Mudcats 2-1 and 10-1 at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Thursday night.
The Pelicans literally walked off in game one, 2-1. Tied at one after Carolina's Ronny Rodriguez and Myrtle Beach's Josh Richmond traded homers in the second and third innings, the game foraged into extra innings.
Myrtle Beach only needed one extra frame, plating the winning run with only one out. Having not taken a walk in the two of the prior four games or in the present game, the Pelicans led off the eighth with a walk to Richmond. Teodoro Martinez then reached on a fielder's choice where no out was recorded. The dup was then sacrificed over by Jared Hoying, making way for an intentional walk to Christian Villanueva. Two batters later Santiago Chirino walked on four pitches from Scott Armstrong to win, 2-1.
Cody Buckel pitched well in a no-decision. He allowed one run on just two hits in five innings. He did, however, allow his first homerun and walk a career high four walks.
In game two, the Pelicans put up season highs in both runs, hits and margin of victory. The 10-1 win broke the prior margin of six, accomplished three times. The 10 runs and 13 hits tie marks set against Winston-Salem and Frederick on April 17th and 30th respectively.
The Pelicans exploded right off the bat, plating a run with four straight singles in the first inning. Myrtle Beach really opened the flood gates in the sixth though. Leading 6-1, the Birds took three straight two out walks ahead of a triple from Odubel Herrera. He also scored on the play after a throwing error to make it 10-1.
The offensive stars of the game were Hoying and Brett Nicholas. Each finished with three hits, a double, and RBI and one and two runs respectively. The pair is now tied for most doubles on the team this season with eight.
Joe Van Meter's effort in a spot start also can't go unnoticed. The Pelicans starter was perfect through four innings. He struck out seven batters. The Birds lost the perfecto on a Jeremie Tice single off Francisco Mendoza with two outs in the fifth (of a seven inning game).
