Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
OUTDUELED: The runs have come few and far between for the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the last few games at Frawley Stadium. That continued on Wednesday night as the Blue Crew fell to the visiting Lynchburg Hillcats, 1-0. Just two Wilmington hits and a solo Lynchburg blast spelled the Blue Rocks' 11th loss in 14 games. The Rocks now stand a season-worst seven games under .500.
POWER OUTAGE: With former Kansas City farmhand Tim Smith's solo homer in the sixth inning, the 2012 Blue Rocks have been out-homered 22-11.
TOO MANY BAGELS: The Rocks have been shut out four times, which is good for tops in the league. The last time they were shut out came at home when the Carolina Mudcats were in town on April 18. In addition, in their 31 games played, they have scored two runs or less in 13 of them, losing all 13. They are on pace to suffer 18 blankings on the year. The franchise record is 15, set by the 2001 squad.
WACKY WEDNESDAY INDEED: Wilmington fell to an odd 0-5 on hump day.
MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH: The Blue Rocks' league-high 12th one-run game of the year dropped them to a CL-worst 4-8 in single-score games. Their last one-run win came on April 24 in a 4-3 road defeat of Salem.
ADAM'S AGONY: Jason Adam's run support has essentially been non-existent so far this year. In seven starts, he has been given 19 runs of support. That averages out to 2.7 runs per game. In all but one of his starts this year he has given up one earned run or less, yet fell to 1-4 with last night's loss.
STARTING STRUGGLES: While Adam's 5.1 innings of one-run ball lowered the starting staff's ERA back under four to 3.97, the loss dropped the starting staff to 6-15. Minus Adam's sterling success, the rest of the squad's starters have amassed a 4.62 ERA. By contrast, the bullpen owns a 6-4 record and a 2.93 ERA. Despite throwing just 37.1 more innings than their relieving counterparts, Wilmington's starters have allowed 18 of the 22 homers hit against the squad.
WHY SO SERIESOUS: After falling Wednesday, the Blue Crew will have to wait until they hit the road to pick up that third series victory of the year. Wilmington has won just two of its first 10 series, including the asterisk of taking two of three at Winston-Salem. A fourth and final game of that set is in suspended limbo with the Blue Rocks leading 3-1 in the first inning. It will be resumed when the teams next meet in Winston-Salem on June 8.
NORTHERN EXPOSURE: Lynchburg marks the lone CL squad Wilmington had yet to face before this series. The first-place Hillcats also play in the Rocks' Northern Division. Including the Blue Crew's three-game set last weekend, it will play 13 straight games against divisional foes. Just three of the team's first 27 games came against divisional competition. Thus far, the Blue Crew owns own a 2-6 record against its Northern brethren. The Blue Rocks do not have a winning record against any of their three foes in the North.
WAKE UP!: With a season-worst two hits last night, the Blue Rocks' batting average dropped to .232, the second-worst contact clip in the CL. Their run-scoring pace stayed in the cellar as well at a shade over 3.5 runs per game.
TROUBLE AT HOME?: Wilmington has tied its season-worst home losing skid at four games. The team has not dropped five in a row at Frawley since a six-game slide from May 1-6, 2012 against Winston-Salem and Salem.
BROOM CLEANING: Lynchburg has not swept Wilmington in a three-game series since July 22-24, 2005 at City Stadium.
