Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - The Wilmington Blue Rocks were due for an offensive explosion after amassing just six runs in their last four home games. The Rocks (13-19) and their bats came alive at an opportune time as they took care of business against the Lynchburg Hillcats (18-13) by a 7-2 final score on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium.

Heading out for a seven-game road trip on Friday, Wilmington had one of its best all-around games of the year. The offense pounded out 13 hits to tie a season-high, scoring seven runs. The defense played a clean game with no errors and the pitching staff allowed just two runs in nine innings.

A close game at 4-2 Wilmington in the eighth, the Blue Rocks put away the Hillcats for good against reliever Blaine Sims, who was in his second inning of work. Back-to-back doubles from Brian Fletcher and Brett Eibner made it 5-2. With runners on first and second and two out, Alex McClure popped a perfectly placed single into left center field for a 6-2 lead. Geulin Beltre came home on a wild pitch moments later to cap off the scoring. For the Rocks, they snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Blue Crew hopped on top in the first inning. With two outs against Lynchburg starter Gus Schlosser, Cheslor Cuthbert reached second thanks to errant throw by shortstop Nick Ahmed. He reached third after a Schlosser wild pitch before Fletcher got him in on an infield single just behind the pitching mound to make it 1-0.

The Blue Crew kept tacking on runs in the early frames. With the scored tied at one in the third, Whit Merrifield got aboard with a floating single to right field. He promptly stole second and Angel Franco then reached on a ground ball that struck infield umpire Jeremy Riggs. With runners on first and second, Cuthbert drove in a run with a broken-bat single to right that helped to re-seize the lead at 2-1.

With one out in the fourth, Beltre reached on a single and moved to third after stealing second base and a throwing error by Ryan Query. McClure then lightly sprayed a ball past Edward Salcedo at third base that scored Beltre to make it 3-1.

With the score at 3-2, the Rocks added a tally in the seventh. Juan Graterol came home from third with two outs as Merrifield reached on an infield single to boost the Wilmington advantage to 4-2.

Sugar Ray Marimon (3-0) had a strong outing after being bumped from his scheduled start on Sunday. He went seven healthy innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out five.

Santiago Garrido was impressive in his Advanced-A and Wilmington Blue Rocks debut. He fired two innings of shutout ball on a pair of hits while fanning three Hillcats.

After salvaging the last game against Lynchburg, the Blue Rocks hit the road for a seven-game trip. They'll kick it off on Friday night with the opener of a three-game set with the Frederick Keys at 7:00 p.m. Wilmington right-hander Greg Billo (2-3, 5.20) hooks up with Frederick righty Mike Wright (4-1, 2.62). Broadcast coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. as studio host Rob Cunningham brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
