Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD (May 10, 2012) - Winston-Salem wrapped up a dominant doubleheader sweep with another offensive explosion. The Dash plated eight runs in the fourth inning en route to an 11-7 victory over the Frederick Keys Thursday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Dash (20-11) are the first Carolina League team to reach 20 wins on the season. They are also the first club in the White Sox organization to reach that plateau. Winston-Salem leads Salem by two-and-a-half games in the Southern Division.
With runners at the corners and one out in the fourth, Marcus Semien doubled home the first run of the frame. He also extended his hitting streak to 16 games, which is the longest in the Carolina League this season.
Carlos Sanchez, who finished with his fifth three-hit effort of the season, immediately followed with a two-run single down the left field line. Two batters later, Brady Shoemaker doubled home Sanchez to celebrate his 25th birthday.
Michael Earley capped off the eight-run inning with a grand slam over the left field wall. It was Earley's sixth home run and the club's second grand slam of the campaign.
Shoemaker completed Winston's scoring with a solo shot to right-center. Shoemaker now has seven long balls this season, which is even with teammate Dan Black among active Carolina League hitters.
Frederick jumped out with four runs in the first inning against Winston-Salem starter Jon Bachanov, who was making his first start of the season and just the eighth in his minor league career. Joe Oliveira's two-run single was the big hit of the frame.
Bachanov settled down to retire the final six men he faced. The righty went three innings and struck out a pair. Out of the bullpen, Justin Collop (4-0) earned his team-leading fourth win of the season after working an inning and a third. Nick McCully tossed an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief, and Taylor Thompson wrapped up the win by allowing a run in the seventh.
Nick Ciolli extended his hit streak to 12 with an RBI double in the second inning. Ciolli's recent run is second to Semien's 16-game run among active hit streaks in the CL.
The Dash continue their road trip with the opener of a three-game series against the Lynchburg Hillcats Friday night at 6:05. Right-hander Ryan Buch (2-2, 5.61 ERA) will toe the rubber for Winston-Salem against southpaw Dimasther Delgado (0-1, 4.50 ERA). Pre-game coverage on wsdash.com begins at 5:50.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark Monday for a seven-game homestand against Myrtle Beach and Lynchburg. For tickets and more information, visit wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287.
