Winston-Salem Dash News Release

FREDERICK, MD (May 10, 2012) - Powered by a seven-run seventh inning, Winston-Salem cruised past Frederick 9-2 in game one of a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium.

In that seventh inning, Winston-Salem (19-11) matched a season high in runs scored in a single frame to pull away from the Keys (10-18). Carlos Sanchez doubled home the Dash's first run of the inning. Trayce Thompson followed with a three-run blast, his fourth homer of the season. The next two batters reached, setting the table for another three-run home run, this one off the bat of Mike Blanke.

The Dash took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Nick Ciolli cleared the left-field wall with a solo shot with one out in the inning. Following back-to-back singles, Marcus Semien brought Michael Earley home with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.

Semien's two singles extended his hitting streak to 15 games, which is the longest by a Carolina League hitter this season. Ciolli's fifth-inning long ball pushed his streak to 11 in a row, which is second to Semien in terms of active hit streaks in the CL.

Winston-Salem starter Spencer Arroyo (2-1) held Frederick hitless through three innings. In the fourth inning, Arroyo allowed a run on Matt Sweeney's RBI single, but he stranded two runners in scoring position to minimize the damage.

Arroyo worked five and a third innings and allowed only the fourth-inning run on four hits. The lefty whiffed six Keys, which is one shy of his season high. In his last five starts, Arroyo has worked through five innings four times. Behind Arroyo, Leroy Hunt and J.R. Ballinger combined to retire the final five batters to earn the victory.

The Dash and Keys still have one more game left Thursday afternoon. Winston-Salem sends Jon Bachanov (3-0, 2.81 ERA) to the mound for his first start against fellow right-hander Justin Moore (0-3, 5.96 ERA). Game two will begin at approximately 1:45 p.m.

The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark Monday, May 14, for a seven-game homestand against Myrtle Beach and Lynchburg. For tickets and more information, visit wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287.
