LumberKings play spoiler on Fan Appreciation Night

Burlington, IA (September 1, 2005) - Eric Hurley fanned eight batters in eight innings and the Clinton LumberKings (30-36, 68-68) pounded out 19 hits in a 10-2 victory over the Burlington Bees (30-36, 64-72) tonight in the final game of the season at Community Field. The Bees and LumberKings split the last four games and will play four more at Alliant Energy Field in Clinton starting tomorrow night. With the loss, the Bees are officially eliminated from playoff contention.

The LumberKings got on the board first on a two-run home run from Ian Gac in the top of the second inning off of Bees' starter Patrick Hicklen (6-8). The Bees got a run back in the bottom of the third when Irving Falu tripled and scored on a single by Gary Perez. Clinton came right back with a run in the top of the fourth on a two-out single by Matt Smith and then scored three in the fifth on RBI singles from Craig Hurba and Gac plus a throwing error by Kenard Springer in left field. Only four of the six runs against Hicklen were earned through five innings.

Rayner Oliveros made his Bees debut, taking over for Hicklen in the sixth. Clinton scored three more runs on six hits in the inning and added another run on a single by Jim Fasano in the seventh. Fasano finished 4-5 with 2 RBI to lead the LumberKings' offense. Rusty Begnaud finished the final two innings without allowing a run. Begnaud has allowed just one run in 13.2 innings in his five appearances since returning from Idaho Falls.

Hurley (12-6) gave up the Bees' second run in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Ed Lucas singled and scored on a double by Miguel Vega. Vega, just activated from the disabled list yesterday, was 2-4 in his first game since June 2nd. Josh Giles walked two, but held the Bees scoreless in the ninth.

With 1,293 fans in attendance tonight, the Bees exceeded the pre-season goal of 70,000 fans with a final total of 70,807 in 68 openings for an average of 1041. This is the 9th-best attendance total in the 43 years of playing in the Midwest League and the fourth consecutive year with an increase in total attendance for the organization. The Bees and LumberKings will finish the regular season with four more games in Clinton starting tomorrow night at 7:00 at Alliant Energy Field. RH Luis Cota (5-8, 4.03) will start for the Bees against RH Kea Kometani (3-2, 2.28) for the LumberKings. The game broadcast on KBUR and KBKB will be preempted due to opening night of high school football in the area.
