Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING- Danny Core scattered six hits in five innings as he won his third straight start and Christian Snavely scored a pair of runs and took away a couple for visiting Fort Wayne as the Lugnuts(68-67, 31-35) defeated the Wizards(64-72, 26-40) by a 7-3 score in front of 5,269 fans on Thursday night at Oldsmobile Park. However, the Lugnuts officially were eliminated from postseason competiton when Southwest Michigan shutout Kane County by a 2-0 score in Battle Creek.
Snavely tripled with one out in the bottom of the first inning and scored on an RBI double by Eric Nielsen to open the scoring off Wizards starter Cesar Ramos(3-2). In five innings, Ramos allowed a season-high 10 hits and five earned runs to take the loss.
Fort Wayne took a 3-1 lead in the second off Core(8-9). Chase Hendley reached on an infield single and went to second on a walk to Kelvin Vazquez. Sean Kazmar then doubled to left to score Headley and tie the game and Matt Bush's sacrifice fly put the Wizards ahead at 2-1. Yordany Ramirez's RBI single scored Kazmar to make it 3-1.
The Lugnuts would creep within a run at 3-2 on a two-out RBI single by Jason Armstrong that scored Yuber Rodriguez and Ryan Klosterman's RBI double in the third plated Aaron Mathews to knot the score.
In the fourth, the Wizards had a chance to take the lead, but a diving catch in left by Snavely robbed Peter Ciofrone with the bases loaded and two outs to keep the score even.
Lansing took the lead for good in the fifth. Snavely drew a leadoff walk off Ramos and went to second on a single by David Hicks. Mathews would then reach on an infield single and on an attempt to force Hicks at second, Wizards third baseman Headley threw wide of second, allowing Snavely to score. Klosterman later added his second RBI double of the game to make it 5-3. The Lugnuts added single runs in the sixth and eighth to close out the scoring.
Jordy Templet worked three scoreless innings of relief for the Lugnuts and Joey McLaughlin navigated a scoreless ninth for Lansing.
The Lugnuts now open their final series of the season tomorrow night as they welcome arch-rival West Michigan to Oldsmobile Park. Game time is set for 7:05 as Lansing sends right hander Hector Delgadillo to the mound. West Michigan counters with lefty Luke French.
