Houser pitches Devil Rays into playoffs

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- James Houser made sure the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays would not be denied with a dominating pitching performance that sent the team to the postseason in a 2-0 win over the Kane County Cougars Thursday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.

Houser allowed one baserunner in six shutout innings with eight strikeouts to earn his eighth win of the season. Richard De Los Santos surrendered two hits and a walk while striking out three batters to earn his third save.

The Rays offense came on a Chris Nowak RBI double in the first inning and a Fernando Frias RBI single in the second for the only two runs the team would need.

Southwest Michigan will host either South Bend or Fort Wayne on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 6:35 p.m. Tickets for Game A will go on sale Friday, Sept. 2 at 9 a.m. They will be available by calling the box office at 269-660-2287 or on the Devil Rays website at southwestmichigandevilrays.com.

The Devil Rays remain three games behind West Michigan for the division lead with four games to go as the Whitecaps beat South Bend 6-3 tonight. Jarrad Laverne will start for the Devil Rays who continue their eight-game homestand against the Swing of the Quad Cities on Sept. 2 at 7:05 p.m. Mark Collier who plays Mike Kasnoff on the ABC soap "As the World Turns," will be on hand for a meet and greet during the game. The first 300 fans through the gates will receive a Mark Collier photograph.
