June 20, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - For the first time since May 27th/28th, the Clinton LumberKings (26-42) followed up a win with another one. Saturday evening, Star Wars Night at Ashford University Field, Clinton scored seven runs in the first four innings and took down the Cedar Rapids Kernels (40-29) 7-4. Tyler Herb (W, 3-4) allowed only one unearned run and four hits in his best start of the season.

The game got off to a brilliant start for Clinton, as the first five men who stepped in vs. Kernels' starter Sam Gibbons (L, 1-2) reached base successfully. Singles by Arby Fields and Martin Peguero, and a hit batsman loaded the bases with no outs for Estarlyn Morales. The All-Star made it 1-0 with an RBI single to left field. Taylor Zeutenhorst followed with an RBI single, while both Joe DeCarlo and Kristian Brito had an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the frame. Seven batters into the game, Clinton led 4-0.

The LumberKings added on two more with a two-out rally in the third. After Gibbons struck out both Morales and Zeutenhorst, DeCarlo doubled to left field. He scored on an RBI single by Brito, while Brito went to second base on a fielding error by right fielder Edgar Corcino. The error proved costly, as James Alfonso followed with an RBI single that made it 6-0 Clinton. Alfonso finished 3-4 in just his third start of the season. Clinton capped off its scoring on Morales' two-out RBI triple in the fourth.

Gibbons allowed seven runs, six earned, over just four innings. The Australian righty set a new season high for runs and hits allowed. In contrast, Herb tied a season low for hits allowed and did not allow an earned run for just the second time in 14 starts. Herb walked the first two men that he faced in the first inning but did not walk anyone else over six strong.

Herb retired 10 of the final 11 hitters that he faced. Nick Gordon led off the sixth with a double and went to third on a throwing error by Morales in right field. Gordon scored on a sacrifice fly by Edgar Corcino, but that was all the damage the Kernels managed vs. the righty.

Cedar Rapids got back into the game against the Clinton bullpen. Thyago Vieira allowed a leadoff home run in the seventh to Max Murphy, while Kody Kerski allowed two runs, one earned, in the ninth inning, but kept the tying man in the on-deck circle with strikeouts of Gordon and Corcino that ended the game.

Clinton has an opportunity to end the first half with its first sweep of the season. Jeffeson Medina (2-6, 4.23) will start for the LumberKings while Jared Wilson (5-2, 3.71) will make his first start of the season vs. Clinton. First pitch at Ashford University Field is scheduled for 2:00 CT. The LumberKings broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
