Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - Burlington starter Austin Robichaux pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out eight, and the Bees scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 2-1 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits in front of 4,146 at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday night.
Due to rain and inclement weather in the area, Saturday's game was delayed 57 minutes in the top of the ninth inning with Burlington leading 2-0. The River Bandits (44-23) rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth inning against Bees reliever Jordan Piche on back-to-back two-out doubles by All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu and first baseman Ryan Bottger. But right fielder Ramon Laureano grounded out to first base to end the game, earning Piche his second save of the season.
Quad Cities starter Francis Martes (1-2) retired the first nine Bees batters in order, striking out six. In his second trip through the lineup, shortstop Jake Yacinich scored the game's first run after leading off the fourth inning with a double, advancing to third base on third baseman Juan Moreno's sacrifice, and then scoring on a sacrifice fly to center field by second baseman Andrew Daniel.
Burlington (35-33) scored its second run on a fifth-inning sacrifice fly to left field by first baseman Ryan Seiz, allowing center fielder Caleb Adams to score. Adams reached to start the inning on a two-base throwing error by River Bandits shortstop Kristian Trompiz and advanced to third on a single by Bees catcher Wade Wass, who had three hits in the game.
Martes finished six innings, allowing two runs - one earned - on two hits, while striking out a career-high nine and walking two, but Robichaux kept the River Bandits off the scoreboard in his start.
Following a two-out double in the first inning by All-Star catcher Jacob Nottingham, the next 10 Quad Cities batters were sent down in order until a leadoff single in the fifth by Bottger, who led Quad Cities with his first three-hit game of the season. Robichaux was finally chased from the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, after Bottger singled with two out to put the tying runs on base. Eduardo Paredes entered to face Laureano, who flied out to center field on one pitch.
In the ninth, River Bandits right-hander Angel Heredia came in from the bullpen after Aaron Greenwood pitched two scoreless innings. Heredia had a 1-1 count on right fielder Natanael Delgado to lead off the inning, when umpires Chris Graham and Chris Stump halted the game because of the rain and nearby lightning, sending the game into a delay that lasted 57 minutes. When play resumed, Heredia finished off the prolonged at-bat with a strikeout of Delgado and worked a scoreless ninth inning, before the River Bandits' rally fell short.
Quad Cities plays its first-half finale and series rubber match with Burlington at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at Modern Woodmen Park. River Bandits right-hander Akeem Bostick (3-1) is scheduled to face Bees right-hander Jeremy Rhoades (4-4).
