TinCaps Beat Bowling Green on SNL Night
June 20, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The TinCaps beat the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 5-1, on Saturday night at Parkview Field. A sellout crowd of 7,751 saw Fort Wayne win its third consecutive game and clinch its fifth straight series victory at home.
After coming from behind to win on Friday, the TinCaps took an early lead in the middle game of this three-game series. Ernesto Montas (W, 6-4) pitched a 1-2-3 top of the first inning. Then in the bottom half, designated hitter Franmil Reyes hit a two-out single to plate center fielder Michael Gettys, who finished with the first four-hit game of his TinCaps tenure.
Fort Wayne (31-36) broke the game open in the bottom of the third against Hot Rods starter Hyrum Formo (L, 4-2). The TinCaps' 6-through-9 hitters -- Franchy Cordero, Luis Tejada, Jose Ruiz, and Chase Jensen -- each drove in a run to make it 5-0.
Bowling Green (37-32) scored its lone run off Montas in the sixth. The 23-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic held the Hot Rods to three hits and no walks. He struck out five batters.
T.J. Weir and Seth Lucio followed Montas with three combined innings of scoreless relief. Fort Wayne's staff has allowed only three earned runs over their current three-game winning streak.
The sellout crowd - Parkview Field's ninth in 2015 - was entertained not only by the win but also by Myron Noodleman and SNL Night promotions. As part of the theme, the TinCaps wore jerseys in the style of the Spartan Cheerleaders from the popular Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri skits. The TinCaps finish the first half of the Midwest League season on Sunday against Bowling Green at 1:05 p.m. at Parkview Field. Fort Wayne is set to start left-hander Brad Wieck (pronounced: Wick), who will be making his debut in the San Diego Padres organization after being acquired in a trade from the New York Mets earlier in the week. The Hot Rods will counter with righty Henry Centeno (4-3, 4.99). The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app. TV coverage starts at 12:30 with a special 30-minute pregame show on Comcast Network 81.
