
Lugnuts Sweep Captains with 10-2 Win

(Lansing, MI)- Dawel Lugo hit a two out double in the bottom of the fifth inning to knock in a run as the Lansing Lugnuts defeated the Lake County Captains 10-2 on Thursday Night. The Lugnuts added another run in the fifth when Lugo scored on a single from Jason Leblebijian. The score was 6-1 after five innings. With the Win the Lugnuts swept the four game series from the Captains. Lake County has now dropped six straight games.
Lansing (8-11) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. D.J. Davis and Dickie Joe Thon each walked and each stole a base. Mitch Nay singled to right field and both runners scored. Lansing took the early 2-0 lead.
The Captains (5-15) came back to score a run in the top of the second inning. Grant Fink singled, and Nellie Rodriguez walked to put two runners on base with nobody out. The bases were loaded with one out when Claudio Bautista lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. Fink scored from third and the lead was trimmed to 2-1.
Lansing came right back and added on. Jason Leblebijian singled and so did Santiago Nessy. Leblebijian scored from second base on a wild pith and Nessy went to third. Justin Atkinson doubled to right field and Nessy scored. The score after two innings was 4-1 Lugnuts.
Lansing was leading 6-1 and added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ian Parmley walked, stole second and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The score was 7-1. Lansing tacked on three more in the bottom of the seventh inning after batting around tacked on three runs and the lead was at 10-1.
The Captains added a run in the top of the eighth. Clint Frazier tripled with one out. Frazier scored on a single by Dorssys Paulino. The score was 10-2. That was the final.
RHP Mitch Brown (0-3) started the game for the Captains and took the loss. Brown pitched four innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits. Brown walked two, and struck out six. Brown also tossed one wild pitch. Matt Whitehouse entered in relief and pitched two innings. Whitehouse allowed five hits, and six runs. Only three of the runs were earned. Whitehouse walked two and struck out two. Wander Beras pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Beras walked one and fanned two. Ben Heller pitched a one-two-three eight inning.
The Lugnuts countered with RHP Kendall Graveman (2-0). Graveman earned the win after twirling six innings and allowing just three hits, two walks and one earned run. Graveman struck out seven. Phil Kish entered in relief and pitched two innings. Kish allowed two hits, one earned run and he struck out three. Griffin Murphy pitched the ninth for Lansing.
The Captains will stay on the road and head to South Bend, IN on Friday to take on the South Bend Silver Hawks in game one of a three game series. The Captains will start LHP Luis Lugo (0-3, 9.58) and South Bend will counter with RHP Blake Perry (0-1, 7.24). First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 PM from Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium.
