Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill- The beginning of the ballgame had an unusual start as both teams made late substitutions for their starting pitchers, but the outcome shifted the attention to the Cougars' endurance. After trailing 7-0 at one point, the Cougars (14-6) battled back for a 10-8 win over the Snappers (7-13) highlighted with a seven run eighth inning on Thursday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
The eighth inning saw three different pitchers and it started with Lee Sosa. Trailing 8-3, Jacob Rogers and David Bote instantly became much needed base runners with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Jordan Hankins was hit by a pitch to load the bases and forcing Sosa out of the game. Trey Martin greeted Stuart Pudenz with a two-run double off the left field wall and shrank the deficit to three runs. Shawon Dunston Jr. followed with an RBI single to make it 8-6 Snappers. Jake Hannemann kept the line moving with a walk and Daniel Lockhart came through with a two-run double. The Cougars rally brought the team within one and kicked Pudenz out of the game, relieved by Dominque Vattuone. Yasiel Balaguert was intentionally walked as Vattuone's first opponent to load the bases hoping for a double play. Rogers recorded an out, but not the one the Snappers were hoping for. Rogers belted a fly ball to center field deep enough to score Hannemann and give the Coguars their first lead of the ballgame 9-8. Lockhart scored on a wild pitch for a two-run lead.
The Snappers were first to strike against Josh Davis, who was a late replacement for Daury Torrez, as they plated a pair in the opening inning. Boog Powell started the offense with a single and scored on BA Vollmuth's RBI double. Two batters later Jaycob Brugman connected on a two-bagger of his own to plate Vollmuth for a 2-0 Beloit lead.
Two singles leading off the inning allowed the Snappers to manufacture another run in the second. With Ryan Huck and Sam Roberts at first and second base, Jose Chavez laid down a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position. Powell followed with a fly ball into foul territory near left field. Martin recorded the out, but the play was deep enough to allow Ryan Huck to tag up and score.
Davis was one out away of having his first unscathed inning, but Brugman triple to keep the frame alive. Luis Baez then hit a groundball to third base that Hankins mishandled scoring Brugman and putting Baez aboard. Baez scored on Huck's double, while another Cougar error off the bat of Roberts scored Huck for a 6-0 lead.
The Snappers scored in four straight innings as they tacked on another run in the fourth. BJ Boyd reached on a fielder's choice and ended up coming around to score on a fourth error committed by the Cougars from Vollmuth's ground ball. It was 7-0 in favor of the Snappers after four innings.
Life first pumped into the Cougars' offense in the sixth inning, with the Snappers' scheduled starter, Covey on the mound. Hannemann led off the frame with the Cougars' third hit of the evening. After recording two outs, Covey walked Rogers, Bote and Will Remillard to force in a run and load the bases. After a pitching change, Hankins split the right side of the infield to drive home Rogers and Bote to take a chunk out of the Snappers' lead 7-3.
Tyler Bremer (2-0) earned the win going three innings of one-hit, one-run baseball and striking out six. Pudenz (1-1) didn't record an out, but allowed four runs on three hits and two walks. Zack Godley (4) picked up the save with a perfect ninth, highlighted by an astonishing catch from Hannemann in center field.
The Cougars now welcome in the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers for a three-game series. Friday's matchup will feature Juan Paniagua (0-1, 5.54) and Zach Quintana (0-0, 3.21). First pitch at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or log on to kccougars.com.
