Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH â The Lowell Lock Monsters snapped the Manchester Monarchs four-game winning streak with a 4-1 win before the 17th sellout crowd (9,916) of the year at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night.
The Monarchs, with a record of 50-20-4-4 and 108 points, will need to wait at least one more day to claim their first-ever Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference championships. That's because the second place Hartford Wolf Pack beat the Albany River Rats on Friday night. To wrap up first place in the division and first place in the conference, the Monarchs need just one more point (two points for a win; one point for an overtime loss or a shootout loss) or one loss (regulation, overtime or shootout) by the Wolf Pack over the next two games.
The Lock Monsters collected three goals in an opening period that included a penalty shot and a goaltending change. Left wing Colin Forbes started things off with his 27th goal, triggered from the blue line at 4:32. Center Eric Staal and right wing Chuck Kobasew assisted.
Defenseman Danny Richmond next gave Lowell a two-goal lead with his fourth goal. He wired his shot from the top of the circles at 8:32 with left wing Ryan Bayda and right wing Chad Larose assisting.
Monarchs right wing George Parros was pulled down from behind on a breakaway into the Lowell zone less than three minutes later, but he failed to score on a penalty shot against Lock Monsters goalie Cam Ward (25 shots, 24 saves) with 11:11 off the first period clock.
Lowell made it 3-0 with a goal from right wing Carsen Germyn at 12:07. He scored with a blistering shot from the left circle just seconds after leaving the penalty box. Germyn's ninth goal of the season was unassisted.
Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser (27 shots, 26 saves) replaced starter Mathieu Garon (7 shots, 4 saves) after Germyn's goal. He closed the period with five saves.
The Monarchs were limited to just five shots on goal in the middle period and the Lock Monsters collected the only goal in the period, scored by center Shaun Sutter at 18:37. Germyn and left wing Lynn Loyns assisted.
The Monarchs snuffed out Ward's shutout bid with a power play goal from left wing Noah Clarke 10:43 into the third period. Right wing Tom Kostopoulos and left wing Dustin Brown assisted on his 20th goal of the season. Clarke, back from injury, was skating in his first game since March 6.
Ward improved to 26-17-3 with the win. Six of his wins have come against the Monarchs this season. Garon (31-14-3) took the loss, his 14th of the season of sixth against the Lock Monsters.
Friday's game marke the 12th and final meeting between the teams. In the 12 games, the Monarchs posted a record of 4-7-0-1. The Monarchs finished with a record of 1-4-0-1 in home games against the Lock Monsters this season.
The Monarchs close out the 2004-05 regular season with road games on Saturday night against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (7:05 p.m.) and on Sunday night against the Worcester IceCats (4:05 p.m.).
