Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ON - In front of 11,247 fans, the Hamilton Bulldogs finished off their 2004-05 regular season with a 5-3 loss to the Rochester Americans on Friday night at Copps Coliseum. The Bulldogs year-end record is 38-29-7-6, good enough for fourth in the North Division and a date with the Amerks in the first round of the playoffs.
The teams exchanged goals in a span of 1:06 in the first period. In only his second game back after missing 13 contests due to injury, Steve Ott opened the scoring for the Bulldogs at the 5:46 mark. Then at 6:40, Thomas Vanek evened the score 1-1 on a Rochester power play.
The Americans took the lead at 5:35 of the second period. After a mad scramble in front of goaltender Dan Ellis, Derek Roy picked up a loose puck and buried a shot in the back of the net to make the score 2-1.
Bulldogs' defenceman Dan Jancevski tied the game 2-2 at 8:04 of the second period. Then Rochester scored three consecutive goals in the remainder of the second frame. Vanek, Jeff Jillson and Mike Iggulden were the goal scorers to give Rochester a 5-2 lead.
The Bulldogs cut into the Amerks lead at 1:18 of the third period on the power play when Tomas Plekanec tipped home a shot from the point by Trevor Daley. The goal was the 71st of Plekanec's career as a Bulldog, tying him with Brian Swanson for first on the All-time franchise goal-scoring list.
Despite out-shooting the Americans 11-7 in the third frame, the Bulldogs could only muster the one goal and lost the game by a score of 5-3. Dan Ellis was solid for the Bulldogs in a losing effort, turning aside 29 of the 34 shots he faced. Rochester netminder Ryan Miller won his league-leading 41st game of the season by making 26 saves on 29 shots.
The Bulldogs next game is on Wednesday, April 20th, when they travel to Rochester to take on the Americans in Game One of the North Division Semi-finals. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and Bulldogs fans can listen to Derek Wills call all the action, starting with the pre-game show at 6:50 p.m. on 820 CHAM in Hamilton, on the Team 990 in Montreal, or via the Internet at www.hamiltonbulldogs.com.
