Loons Win Streak, Magic Number Now Five

August 25, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - Kevin Taylor homered and drove in two runs, and the Great Lakes Loons rallied from down 2-0 to defeat the South Bend Silver Hawks, 4-2, Sunday afternoon.

With seven games remaining in 2013, the Loons' magic number to clinch a playoff berth is five. Any combination of five wins or five losses by the team in third place in the playoff standings - currently Dayton - results in the Loons advancing to the postseason for the first time since 2010. Dayton helped its cause by defeating Lansing Sunday, 5-4, in 11 innings to remain 2 1/2 games behind the Loons in the playoff standings. The Loons trail Bowling Green by 1 1/2 games for the top playoff seed after Bowling Green won at home versus Fort Wayne, 2-1.

Taylor drove in the Loons' first two runs of the game. Down 2-0, Taylor connected on a one-out solo home run to right field in the top of the fifth to cut South Bend's advantage to one. In the seventh, after a double by Aaron Miller, Taylor drove an 0-2 pitch up the middle for a run-scoring single to tie the score.

The next inning, against lefty reliever Daniel Gibson, the Loons took the lead. Robbie Garvey snuck a ground ball through the right-side of the infield to score Brandon Trinkwon from second for the go-ahead run.

In the top of the ninth, the Loons added their fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left field by Devin Shines scoring Jeremy Rathjen, who led off the frame with a double.

Loons starter Jonathan Martinez allowed just two runs over six innings to notch a quality start and a no-decision. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Ralston Cash (4-3) recorded the win with 1 2/3 scoreless, hitless innings of relief. Owen Jones retired the final four Silver Hawks for his fifth save of the year.

Gibson (0-1) took the loss. Braden Shipley, the Diamondbacks' first-round selection this year, allowed two runs (all earned) in seven innings for a no-decision.

The Loons (37-25 second half, 64-68 overall) and Silver Hawks (33-30, 77-55) face each other Monday at 7:05pm ET in the series finale. Nineteen-year old righty Zachary Bird (2-4, 5.04 ERA) matches up against South Bend right-hander Robert Coe (3-1, 3.30). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com

The Great Lakes Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
