South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Despite a strong start from Braden Shipley, the Hawks could not stop their losing streak as the Great Lakes Loons defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Coveleski Regional Stadium. Shipley threw seven strong innings, allowing just two earned runs, but the Loons scored single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to complete the comeback and send the Hawks to their eighth straight loss.
The two starting pitchers were on their game early as both pitchers threw perfect first innings. The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the second against Great Lakes starter Jackson Martinez. With two outs in the inning, catcher Roidany Aguila came to the plate, and taking advantage of a five knot outbound wind, launched a 1-0 pitch from Martinez over the left-field wall for a solo homer and a 1-0 lead.
South Bend (77-55, 33-30) added on to their lead in the third inning as the bottom of the order combined for a run. Second baseman Pedro Ruiz led off with a fly ball triple over the center fielder's head. Shortstop Andrew Velazquez followed and grounded a single up the middle that scored Ruiz and gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Great Lakes (64-68, 37-25) pulled a run back in the top of the fifth inning against Hawks starter Shipley. With one out, second baseman Kevin Taylor hit the first pitch of the at-bat over the right field wall to cut the lead to 2-1. The Loons, the Class-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, went on to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. First baseman Aaron Miller lined a double down the left-field line with one out in the inning. After Shipley struck out designated hitter Devin Shines, Taylor came through for the Loons again, knocking a single to center that scored Miller and tied the game at 2-2.
Martinez's night came to an end for the Loons after six strong innings. Martinez allowed just two earned runs on five hits while striking out five Silver Hawks. He was replaced by Ralston Cash (W, 4-3) to start the bottom of the seventh inning. Cash threw a perfect seventh to take the game into the eighth inning tied at 2-2. Hawks starter Braden Shipley was replaced by Daniel Gibson (L, 0-1) to start the top of the eighth after seven impressive innings. Shipley turned in a desperately needed strong start for the Hawks, allowing only two runs on four hits while fanning five Loons.
The Hawks, the Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, fell behind in the eighth as Great Lakes plated a run to take a 3-2 lead. Catcher Jose Capellan led off the inning with a bunt single past the mound. Shortstop Brandon Trinkwon tried to get down a sacrifice bunt but Gibson got off the mound quickly and fired the ball to second for the force-out. Center fielder James Baldwin struck out for the second out of the inning. With left fielder Robbie Garvey at the plate and two outs, Trinkwon got a good jump and stole second base. This proved critical as Garvey singled to right, scoring Trinkwon. Garvey was out attempting to go to second but the damage was done and the Loons took a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning.
Cash began the eighth inning for the Loons and retired the first two batters he faced before walking center fielder Breland Almadova on four pitches. Loons manager Razor Shines made the call to the bullpen and summoned Owen Jones (S, 5) to pitch to right fielder Socrates Brito. Jones retired Brito on a routine ground ball too short to end the inning.
Jimmie Sherfy entered the game to pitch for the Hawks in the ninth inning. Right fielder Jeremy Rathjen led off the inning with a perfectly placed ground ball that eluded Hawks third baseman Brandon Drury and resulted in a double down the third base line. Miller followed with a ground ball single through the right side that put runners at the corners with nobody out. Shines then hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Rathjen and gave the Loons a critical insurance run for a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning.
South Bend looked to rally in the bottom of the ninth against Jones. Drury led off with a ringing double into the left field corner to bring the tying run to the plate. Jones settled down after that by striking out first baseman Rudy Flores and getting left fielder Michael Lang to pop up a bunt attempt back to the pitcher. Aguila grounded out to short to end the game.
The Hawks and Loons complete their three-game series on Monday night with first pitch at 7:05pm. Zachary Bird (2-4, 5.04 ERA) gets the ball for the Loons while Rob Coe (3-1, 3.30 ERA) tries to stop the eight-game slide for the Hawks. It's the last Belly Buster Monday of the regular season so come to Coveleski Regional Stadium and upgrade your ticket for a wristband that includes unlimited hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn and peanuts during the game.
