Quad Cities Clinches Playoff Spot with 5-1 Win
August 25, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Mark Appel's final start this season was a memorable one, as he tossed five innings of one-run ball and helped the Quad Cities River Bandits clinch a playoff berth.
The River Bandits (75-55, 37-24) magic number to clinch a playoff spot was one entering Sunday afternoon's contest, meaning a win or a Peoria loss would give the Bandits a spot in the playoffs. Quad Cities got a Peoria loss, but did not need it, knocking off the Bees (51-76, 25-37) for the fifth straight time.
Appel (3-1) made his final start of 2013 because the Houston Astros decided to shut him down after today's start. Appel will end the year on a winning note, as he held the Bees to one run on four hits and three walks. The lone run came home on a two-out double by Wade Hinkle that scored Angel Rosa, who had reached via a single.
Tyler DeLoach (5-5) failed to get out of the fifth inning for the third consecutive start, allowing five runs against the Bandits for the second game in a row. DeLoach surrendered one run in the first, two in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Quad Cities got on the board in the first when Tony Kemp led off the game with a walk and scored on a double by Carlos Correa.
After Burlington tied the game in the bottom of the inning, both Appel and DeLoach exchanged zeroes for the next two frames. In the fourth, DeLoach struck out the side, but he allowed solo home runs to Rio Ruiz and Roberto Pena. DeLoach finished the day with eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
One inning later, the Bandits put together a two-out rally thanks to some poor defense by Burlington. Teoscar Hernandez singled with one out and scored when Danry Vasquez singled and took a wide turn around first, prompting an errant throw from Angel Rosa that got past first base. The error allowed Hernandez to score and moved Vasquez to second. DeLoach was pulled with a man at second and two outs, and Andres Perez came in and looked like he was going to get out of the inning with a pop up in front of home plate by Bobby Borchering; however, four Bees had the ball drop in between them, allowing Vasquez to score all the way from second base.
Jamaine Cotton and Patrick Christensen tossed four innings of no-hit baseball out of the bullpen to secure the victory for Quad Cities.
Burlington has now lost five in a row to Quad Cities and will look to end the losing streak when Ryan Crowley takes on Josh Hader at 6:30 p.m. on Monday night at Community Field.
