Peoria Chiefs News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA- The Peoria Chiefs snapped a 30-inning scoreless streak on Sunday night but still lost to the first-place Cedar Rapids Kernels 9-1. The loss, their fourth in a row, drops the Chiefs to 28-34 in the second half and 66-63 overall in 23. With eight games left in the regular season, Peoria is three games behind Clinton in the Wild Card race.
Chiefs right-hander Cory Jones made his return from the disabled list with his first start since July 22 but the Kernels came out swinging. With one down in the first, Tyler Grimes reached on a single off the glove of Ildemaro Vargas at third base. Grimes moved to second on a wild pitch and with two on and two out, Travis Harrison singled for a 1-0 lead. The Kernels made it 2-0 when Bo Altobelli's double down the left field line plated Mike Gonzales.
The Kernels added on in the third inning and knocked Jones out in the fourth. In the third, Adam Walker singled to right, moved to second on an error and scored on a Gonzales double. With the Chiefs down 3-0, Cedar Rapids doubled the lead in the fourth. Ryan Walked doubled to left, Jeremias Pineda singled and Jonathan Murphy walked to load the bases. Grimes blooped a single to center for a 4-0 lead and a wild pitch put Cedar Rapids up 5-0. Jay Voss relieved Jones after a walk and Gonzales was hit by a pitch for a 6-0 Kernels lead.
The Chiefs, who hadn't scored since the seventh inning of a 13-inning loss on Thursday night, hit into a double play early in the game and left a lead-off triple at third in the fifth. The Chiefs finally broke through in the sixth inning against Tim Shibuya. Bruce Caldwell walked and moved to second on a single by Jonathan Keener. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt and with one out, Caldwell scored on a sacrifice fly by Breyvic Valera. The run scored exactly 30 innings after the previous Chiefs run three days earlier and one inning before the Chiefs would have tied an all-time franchise scoreless record.
Cedar Rapids scored three runs off Joe Scanio in the sixth to pad their lead for a 9-1 win. Altobelli delivered the first with a sacrifice fly and Ryan Walker singled home the other two before Scanio got out of the inning.
Jones (7-2) took his first loss since June 20 as he allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander walked three, struck out one and threw two wild pitches in his return to the mound. Voss allowed two hits over 2/3 of an inning and left in the fifth after a grounder back to the mound hit him in the upper body. Scanio allowed three runs on three hits over two innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Brady Adamek threw a scoreless inning with one hit allowed and one strikeout. Catcher Gerwuins Velazco threw a perfect eighth inning with two flyouts and a groundout.
