Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Rubby De La Rosa fired eight strong innings, allowing just three hits and one run, as the Great Lakes Loons edged the Dayton Dragons 3-1 on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 8,889 at Fifth Third Field. The win was the Loons' 11th in their last 12 games.
De La Rosa, 21-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic, allowed only three runners to reach base over eight innings to improve his record to 3-1. He walked no one and struck out six.
Great Lakes scored in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Christian Lara singled to center to start the game, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a bunt single by Nick Buss, and scored on an error by Dayton third baseman Kevyn Feiner.
In the sixth inning, Great Lakes' Brian Cavazos-Galvez drilled a two-run home run to left field to give the Loons a 3-0 lead.
Dayton's Alex Oliveras got the Dragons on the board with a solo home run with two outs in the seventh inning. It was his third homer of the year and second in his last two games to make it 3-1.
But the Dragons had only one base runner the rest of the way. Didi Gregorius reached on an infield single with one out in the ninth inning and was stranded at first base.
Dragons starting pitcher J.C. Sulbaran worked the first six innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) with two walks and seven strikeouts. He suffered the loss and fell to 4-5.
Dragons reliever Blair Carson replaced Sulbaran and worked three scoreless innings, allowing just one base runner.
The Dragons finished with just four hits. In addition to the Oliveras homer and the Gregorius single, Henry Rodriguez had a double and Andrew Means added an infield single.
The Dragons (7-10) host Great Lakes (14-3) in the series finale at 7:00 p.m. on Monday at Fifth Third Field. Jacob Johnson (4-5, 4.98) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes' Elisaul Pimentel (8-3, 2.91). The Dragons are off on Tuesday before opening a six-game road trip in Peoria on Wednesday. The next home game is Wednesday, July 21 vs. the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
