South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - Keon Broxton tripled twice for South Bend, setting a new franchise record with his 12th and 13th of the season, and the Silver Hawks defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps 4-3 on Sunday afternoon for their second straight win.
Broxton tied the Silver Hawks team record set by Victor Hall in 2001 when he took the first pitch of the game from Jose De Paula (ND) to right-center field for his 12th triple of the season. He broke the record in the top of the fifth when his 13th triple of the year went to the wall in left-center field. Broxton leads all of Minor League Baseball in the category as well, but oddly enough, neither triple influenced the outcome of the game.
Instead, the home run ball did the trick early for the Silver Hawks. Bobby Borchering hit a solo shot in the third inning to give South Bend a 1-0 lead. Borchering's ninth home run of the season completely left the stadium in left field, traveling an estimated 400+ feet. David Narodowski added his first home run of the year in the fourth inning to put the lead at 2-0.
The TinCaps chipped away, scoring an unearned run in the fifth against Scottie Allen (ND) and another in the sixth against Adam Worthington (WP, 2-1) to tie the game at 2-2.
South Bend broke the tie in the top of the eighth against Miles Mikolas (LP, 4-2). Victor Estevez singled to start the inning and Borchering doubled to put two in scoring position with nobody out. Matt Davidson drove the both home with a single to left-center, extending his league leading RBI total to 59.
The TinCaps cut the lead to one with a solo home run by Edinson Rincon in the eighth against Randy Rodriguez (ND) and Fort Wayne loaded the bases against Yonata Ortega (SV, 18) in the ninth. However, Ortega got Daniel Meeley to fly out to Broxton as the final out, wrapping up the victory for the Silver Hawks.
Allen pitched great in his return from the disabled list, allowing just the one unearned run over 5.0 innings while striking out three and walking nobody.
The teams wrap up the three game series at Parkview Field Monday night at 7:05 PM Eastern Time. RHP Brad Gemberling (2-5, 5.40 ERA) will make the start for South Bend against Fort Wayne's LHP Pedro Hernandez (2-3, 4.39 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
