Loons Blanked Again, Fall in Series Finale in Lansing

LANSING, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons tallied seven runs on 14 hits to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts at Jackson Field on Saturday night.

They must've used up their allotment.

The Loons were held to no runs on five hits Sunday afternoon, losing the series finale to the Lugnuts, 4-0.

Lansing (32-49, 7-8 second half) kicked off the scoring in the second frame. Matt Cross doubled with one out in the frame, followed immediately by a Joshwan Wright triple. One out later, Marcos Brito singled to score Wright, then stole second base. Drew Swift then hit an RBI single, and the Lugnuts held a 3-0 lead.

The Loons (49-32, 9-6) started left-hander Lael Lockhart (L, 2-1), whose third inning was his most strenuous. He did not walk a batter, but allowed eight hits in 4 2-3 innings while striking out six. Three of the four runs he allowed were earned.

The Lugnuts, High-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, scored their fourth run in the fifth frame. After Gabriel Maciel reached on a throwing error, Jack Winkler doubled him home, and that ended the day for Lockhart.

Great Lakes, the Los Angeles Dodgers' High-A partner, was stifled by Lansing righty Jake Walkinshaw, who had the best start of his short season. Walkinshaw allowed a walk and two hits over four scoreless frames, punching out nine batters along the way. He was pulled after four innings in just his third start since returning from a rehab stint at the Complex.

After Walkinshaw, the Lugnuts turned to Brock Whittlesey (W, 2-1), who allowed a leadoff infield single to Aldrich De Jongh, then retired the next six Loons in order, striking out one.

The Loons made some noise in the seventh inning, which was led off by an Eddys Leonard double. After a pair of walks, the bases were loaded, but Kumar Nambiar came in and stranded all three inherited runners to keep the Loons scoreless.

Nambiar pitched a perfect 1 1-3 innings, then Trayson Kubo pitched around a hit and a walk in the ninth inning, striking out two and ending the contest with a 4-0 win for the Lugnuts.

Lansing wins the series, four games to two. It is the first series loss for the Loons since dropping four of six to the South Bend Cubs in Fort Wayne, Ind., on May 24-29. It is also the Loons' first series loss on the road against an Eastern division opponent all season.

The Loons' road trip continues Tuesday, heading to Davenport, Iowa, to take on the Quad Cities River Bandits (31-49, 5-9) in a six-game series. It is the only 12-game road trip of the year for Great Lakes. Game one Tuesday begins at 7:30 p.m., pregame coverage kicks off at 7:15 p.m. with the Loons On-Deck Circle, driven by Garber Chevrolet Midland, on ESPN 100.9-FM.
