Lake County Captains News Release

(FORT WAYNE, IN) - The Lake County Captains (41-39) dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (32-48), on a breezy and sunny Saturday night at Parkview Field. Game one was a 3-2 final and game two 6-2.

Game One

Doug Nikhazy turned in the best pitching performance in a Lake County loss this season. The left-hander struck out 11 TinCaps, including five through the first three innings. Before the seventh, Nikhazy allowed just two runners, both off walks, and totaled nine punchouts.

The Captains scored two runs both coming in the third. After a leadoff walk from Quentin Holmes, Angel Martinez belted a ball to deep left field, giving Lake County a 2-0 lead. Martinez has three home runs in his last four games.

To begin the bottom of the seventh, Doug Nikhazy permitted a third baserunner after a base on balls. The 2021 Second Round Pick then struck out the next two batters and was one out away from completing the first individual complete-game no-hitter in Captains history.

A groundball was hit and fielded by Gabriel Rodriguez after a look towards second base with no infielder present a throw came to first across the diamond that was not in time to get the runner. After that, the TinCaps powered an RBI single and then got a passed ball from newly entered Alaska Abney that knotted up the score.

In the top of the eighth, Lake County loaded the bases after two walks from Joe Naranjo and Johnathan Rodriguez. A lineout, flyout, and groundout followed and the Captains didn't score.

Fort Wayne got a bunt single and back-to-back walks for a literal walk-off, 3-2.

Game Two

The TinCaps posted four runs off three hits in the second inning against Jordan Jones. Corey Rosier led off the frame with a triple and was plated by a sacrifice fly. After two walks and a single loaded the bases, Matthew Acosta roped a three-run double to right-center field to make it a four-run advantage.

After having one runner reach in the first two innings, Milan Tolentino cut the deficit in half with a two-run blast in the third inning. The 20-year-old hammered a ball over the right-field wall, for his first career home run in Lake County.

The TinCaps tacked on two more runs, an RBI double in the fourth and a solo shot in the fifth. Braunny Munoz made his Lake County debut and despite those two runs, he got two strikeouts over four innings.

In the final four innings, Lake County mustered three hits, Quentin Holmes reached on a base knock in the seventh but was caught stealing.

The final game of the six-game road series is tomorrow Sunday, July 10 at Parkview Field. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m.

Coverage of the game can be found on WJCU.org/Captains and the MiLB First Pitch app.
