Beloit Takes Rollercoaster Finale

July 10, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

After leading for most of the game, the Sky Carp needed a ninth inning, two-out RBI single from Ynmanol Marinez to defeat the Peoria Chiefs 6-5 in the series finale on Sunday at Dozer Park.

With the victory, Beloit wins the series four games to two, marking its sixth series win in the last seven sets.

The Sky Carp struck first with a Will Banfield two-run homer in the second inning - his eighth of the year and second in as many games. Beloit pushed the lead to 3-0 thanks to a bases-loaded balk from Wilfredo Pereria in the third.

From there, both offenses were quiet until the late stages.

After Sky Carp starter Jackson Rose tossed three scoreless innings, Josan Mendez retired all six batters he faced in two innings.

Brady Puckett continued the strong pitching, working a 1-2-3 sixth inning. However, late-inning drama started brewing in the seventh.

After Beloit scored an insurance run against Cardinals' rehabber Drew VerHagen, Puckett ran into trouble after the stretch. With one out, the righty walked and hit a batter. Both runners eventually came in to score to trim the lead to 4-2.

Victor Mesa Jr provided a much-needed insurance run with a sac-fly in the top of the eighth to bring the lead back to 5-2.

Robinson Martinez finished the bottom of the seventh for Beloit and stayed in for the bottom of the eighth. The Chiefs jumped all over the hard throwing righty. After a leadoff walk, LJ Jones sent a line-drive homer to left field to trim the lead to 5-4.

Martinez then recorded two outs, but then allowed a solo homer to Noah Medlinger to knot the game at five.

The Chiefs chased Martinez out of the game with a single and a walk, putting the go-ahead run on second base. Justin Evans then took over and thickened the plot by hitting Todd Lott to load the bases but escaped the jam with the flyout.

In the top of the ninth, Nasim Nunez singled off Nick Trogerlic-Iverson with one out and stole second base with two outs to move into scoring position for Marinez.

The Sky Carp third baseman came through in the clutch, lining a single up the middle to put Beloit in front 6-5.

Evans stayed in to close the game and worked around a two-out walk to slam the door.

The Sky Carp return to ABC Supply Stadium for a six game homestand against Cedar Rapids starting on Tuesday at 6:35. Tickets are available now at SkyCarp.com.
