Lake County Captains News Release
(FORT WAYNE, IN) - The Lake County Captains (42-39) hammered three long balls to take a 5-2 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps (32-49), on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field.
Tommy Mace had his longest start of the 2022 season. The 2021 Second Round Pick retired the first eight TinCaps he faced. Fort Wayne would take a lead after a solo homer from Anthony Vilar, their nine-hitter.
Johnathan Rodriguez had quite the performance and tied the game with one swing of the bat, twice. In the top of the fourth, he delivered the first Captains hit and run with a solo drive to deep left-field.
After steamrolling through the fifth inning in six pitches, Mace entered the sixth inning for the first time this season. After a strikeout and a flyout, the right-hander permitted his only walk of the day. Matt Turner was then brought in, he allowed two walks and hit a batter, the second walk brought across the go-ahead run. Raymond Burgos finished the inning with a strikeout.
Once more Johnathan Rodriguez responded by belting one over the left-field fence to knot up the score at two. Rodriguez hit both homers off TinCaps starter Jackson Wolf, the left-hander allowed just those two hits.
In the bottom of the seventh, Fort Wayne got a leadoff walk, but a bunt attempt that went awry took that runner away. Zac Fascia caught the bunt attempt and then fired to first for the 2-3 double play.
Lake County claimed their first lead in the top of the eighth. Angel Martinez lined a double and Joe Naranjo walked. Alexfri Planez then stepped up and after striking out three times, he crushed a 3-2 pitch 421 feet over the left-center field wall. It gave Planez home run his eleventh homer of the season and extended his hitting streak to 21 games.
Burgos worked a scoreless eighth and then Trey Benton despite allowing two runners, closed the door to earn his third save as a Captain.
After an off-day, the Lake County Captains begin a six-game series at Classic Park against the Dayton Dragons. First pitch on Tuesday, July 12 is at 11:00 a.m.
Coverage of the game can be found on WJCU.org/Captains and the MiLB First Pitch app.
